Q: I sit at a desk all day at work and my back often feels tight when I get home. Is there a good stretch that I can do to relieve this discomfort? A: Stretching out your latissimus dorsi and back extensor muscles should provide some good relief and help you to limber up some of those tight muscles. To stretch … Read More…

The Real Reason Airplane Food Tastes So Bad

Source: http://greatist.com/eat/airline-meals-the-real-reason-they-taste-so-bad?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Airplane food gets a bad rap (whatever you do, don’t order the fish!), but it’s partly your fault the meals are less than five star. As this video from SciShow explains, humidity, air pressure, smell, and even sound can all impact the way food tastes to you.

The double whammy of dry air and low pressure gives most people dry mouth and makes it harder to taste and smell flavors. But all hope isn’t lost: While sweet and salty foods taste blander when you’re flying, scientists have found that some flavors, like tomato, actually get bolder in the air. So now you have an excuse to order a Bloody Mary on your next flight.

Spring is almost here. Can you taste it? The subtle sweetness of new green carving its way out from under the hard earth, the mellow salt of life reawakening from a long slumber. In the spring, we too have an invitation to reawaken, not just to the world around us, but to the life within. prep-edamame-hummus-sonima-kale-caramelShareTweetPlusPin

We can make new rules for how we live, how we breathe, how we work, how we argue, how we eat. We can reawaken the places in our hearts that have become numb in the cold of winter and loss. And we can nourish ourselves with foods that usher in new life. Enter this lush, pale green edamame hummus.side-edamame-hummus-sonima-kale-caramelShareTweetPlusPin

Creamy and rich with umami from miso and tahini, this hummus is the perfect appetizer, party snack, or building block for lunch or dinner. Serve it with as many spring veggies as you can load on the platter, and finish it with a generous hand of black sesame seeds and olive oil.

How to Stay Calm in a Chaotic, Stressed Out World

Meditating Girl

“You can’t calm the storm so stop trying. What you can do is calm yourself and the storm will pass.” ~Timber Hawkeye

After another driver pulled out in front of me and narrowly missed a collision, I put on my brakes and waited for the car to stop. As the other driver sailed off ahead of me, my hysterical passenger screamed, “What an idiot! Didn’t you see him? Why didn’t you blast the horn? These people shouldn’t be on the road!”

I realized my reaction, or lack of reaction, was out of the ordinary, and I also noticed that despite the circumstance I had remained equanimous—I hadn’t let it disturb my peace of mind.

I wasn’t angry with the driver, my blood pressure hadn’t increased, and no damage had been done. I was at peace.

It hadn’t always been this way. I inherited a short fuse from my dad (at least, that’s the excuse I used for years).

I was a footballer and with it, competitive and aggressive. Road rage was common, even when I wasn’t in a car, and I’ve been known to throw things across the room in frustration.

The person I am now could not be more different in this respect, and I’m a lot happier as a result, not to mention the improvement in my relationships and my health.

Imagine a day where very little upsets …

Hi friends! Thank you for your kind comments on my Rock ‘n’ Roll DC Half Marathon race recap! I can’t wait for the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in a couple weeks. :) Fingers crossed for good and not too hot weather!

In other news – happy St. Patrick’s Day! Anyone have any fun plans? I suggest my making my Healthy Shamrock Shake, Whole Wheat Irish Soda Bread, and/or Vegan and Gluten Free Shepherd’s Pie to celebrate. 😉

I started my St. Patrick’s Day at the track! This was my first run since the race on Saturday – felt good to get back out there, especially on such a nice morning – it was gorgeous out! Cold and crisp but sunny by the time we were done. It was harder to get up since it’s dark again at that hour now thanks to daylight savings… although I am loving having bright evenings again!

This morning, our coach had us do a 20 to 30 minute tempo run at around half marathon pace – so pushing a bit but sustainable. I did 20 minutes because my legs are still a bit tired from the ra…

How to Make Greek Stir Fry

Source: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2016/03/17/how-to-make-greek-stir-fry/

This is from Team NF Member Rebel Chef Noel.

It’s March! The shine of the new year has worn off and the motivation inherent with New Year’s resolutions has dwindled away. If you’ve taken advice from Steve, some of those resolutions have become habits by now, and you’ve moved on to tackle bigger and better dragons.

Whether or not you partake in the new years hype, we all start new habits or respawn from time to time. When we do this, the motivation and energy that comes with starting something new doesn’t last forever.

If you’ve recently vowed to cook more of your own food or start a healthy eating habit, the excitement can wear off, and eating the same thing over and over again can start to feel boring.

So if you’re feeling too tired or too lazy to cook a healthy meal, the noble stir fry is here to rescue you.

Barney_Moss_Lego

Until recently, I always through stir fry meant an Asian dish, but I was listening to a Nom Nom Paleo podcast recently, and she was talking about her garbage stir fries – basically anything she has in the fridge or pantry as an easy weeknight meal. Awesome idea, right?

Stir fries are great becaus…

How Sufism Has Been Adopted by New Age Culture

In today’s world of New Age culture, in which people of a diversity of backgrounds lay claim to certain religious and moral affinities beyond their own upbrining, it becomes more and more difficult to understand the context and history of the more esoteric religious rituals and belief systems. Sufism, for example, has been adopted by the modern spiritual world, with little regard for its origin. In this video, Sonima’s founder, Sonia Jones, sits with Shankar Nair, Ph.D., an assistant professor of religious studies at University of Virginia, to understand the origin of Sufism and how it relates to New Age culture.

Related: What is Sufism?

From Nair’s perspective, it is the colonial notion that Islam is a dry, legalistic religion, that has led so many moderns to see Sufism, which is so deeply spiritual, as a separate strand of religiosity. Watch the video above to understand more about the intimate relationship between Sufism and Islam.

Bill Blocking GMO Labels Stalls In Senate, But Battle Is Far From Over

It’s been called “perhaps the most contentious issue in the food industry”: Should food products be labeled to indicate they contain genetically modified ingredients?

Leading Republicans in the Senate tried to answer that question on Wednesday with a clear “no,” but failed. The Senate rejected a bill that would have prevented any state from requiring GMO labels on food. The bill, sponsored by Kansas Republican Sen. Pat Roberts, would have created a voluntary national labeling standard for foods containing GMOs, but it would have blocked Vermont from implementing its first-in-the-nation mandatory GMO labeling law, currently set to take effect on July 1.

See How One Woman Is Removing the Stigma Around Scars

We’re taught to hide our scars—both the physical and emotional kind—because they make others uncomfortable. Michelle Elman, a body confidence coach, knows this all too well. She felt ashamed of her body, especially her scars from 15 surgeries. Then one day last year, she got fed up and posted a photo of herself in a bikini on Instagram. Her post quickly went viral, and now she’s back with a video in which she talks to others who have joined the #ScarredNotScared movement. Their struggles with scars and hopeful thoughts for the future give us all the feels.
