We love following celebrities on Instagram, but some of their healthy living habits seem pretty far-fetched and impeccably curated. That’s why we love Goldie Hawn’s super-honest account, which shows that doing what’s good for you isn’t all about perfect yoga poses and waist trainers. Plus, it can be pretty freaking fun. It’s the standard date setup: mood lighting and overpriced cocktails. You can barely read the menu, but damn do you look good. The other downside? New research suggests dimly lit restaurants may be to blame for poor food choices.

In fact, people who ate in well-lit rooms were nearly 25 percent more likely to eat something healthy (think veggies and salmon instead of fried chicken and mashed potatoes), while diners in darker restaurants ordered food that had nearly 40 percent more calories.

Researchers say it has to do with how alert you are. When given caffeine, diners in both bright and dark rooms were equally likely to make healthy meal choices. So instead of forgoing date night or boycotting restaurants with a romantic ambiance, get a cup of coffee with your meal or simply be more mindful of what you order.

As we lean into the start of summer, I’m craving food that is juicy, delectable, easy, and fun. I want meals that lend themselves to the joy of the party, rather than becoming the main event, as is so often the case around holidays in the colder months. Watermelon, popsicles, vibrant salads, ice cream, and, yes, veggie burgers.

Raised a vegetarian, I have long held a very special place in my heart for veggie burgers. I remember the first, epic GardenBurger I tried, the way its savory blend paired so perfectly with melted cheese, avocado, dill pickles, and tangy ketchup. I’ve tried many a veggie burger since then, and have come to appreciate those that stay vegetable-centric while hitting as many umami notes as possible.

These burgers, made of earthy lentils, rich caramelized onions, brown rice, sautéed mushrooms, smoked paprika, and shredded mozzarella, are the perfect answer to every summer barbecue.

Some extraordinary medical facilities extend their services well beyond hospital walls as proven by the Dubin Breast Center of the Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. In this video interview, Sonima.com’s founder, Sonia Jones, learns more from Yannette Tactuk, a clinical oncology social worker at the center, about the various ways medical workers can make themselves available both on- and off-site. In addition to keeping current patients engaged and feeling supported through activities—including a Crafts and Laughs night, a swimming club, a yoga group, a young women’s group for breast cancer survivors under 40, etc.—the Dubin Breast Center also hosts outreach initiatives where providers visit local communities, like East Harlem, to raise awareness about breast health and offer referrals for free detection exams, such as mammograms and biopsies, at the center.

It was five years ago this month that my father passed away from cancer. About four months before his death, his oncologist gave him a bleak diagnosis, telling him to get his affairs in order because he could die at any time.

Our entire family was dumbstruck. Here was a man who appeared to be strong and generally healthy.

He was a youthful sixty-eight years old. Just months into his retirement after a long and impactful career in social work, this was my dad’s time to enjoy the pleasures of post-retirement life, not brace for a devastatingly premature death.

What a month! We just finished our Minimalism Documentary Tour 2016—bringing Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things to more than a dozen cities across North America—and we were blown away by the response.

Not only did every event fill the rafters, but we saw immense diversity among the crowds: high schoolers and grandmothers, executives and factory workers, stay-at-home dads and single parents. Everyone on every spectrum was represented, and they all shared one thing in common: they’re all striving to live a meaningful life.

Love as patience

I used to be obsessed with outcomes. A perfectionist intolerant of failure, I was constantly trying to prove my worth. This made me unpleasant to others, and to myself.
