2017 is a new year

I am absolutely going to achieve 3 things:

  • A healthier life – including losing weight (sound familiar this time of year?) Incredibly important. And never too late to start!
  • Master my time – to get the most out of what I am given
  • Meet my business goals – right up on the wall here to remind me

How often do you exercise each week?

  • Less than 1 hour
  • 1–2 hours
  • 2–4 hours
  • More than 4 hours

Exercise has a big impact on your overall health.

People who stay active have healthier hearts, minds, blood sugar control, better mood, and tend to live longer.

Good job making time for regular exercise! (If this is you!)

How much is enough? Experts (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) say 2-3 hours a week minimum.

You don’t have to do it all at once, 10-15 minutes at a time works just a well.

Motion = Energy

Why do we want energy?

  • We get things done
  • Improves our mood
  • Rubs off on others

Suggestions for increasing the time you spend exercising?

  • Do something fun
  • Do something with others
  • Make a commitment
  • Get consistent
  • Build healthy habits
  • Push yourself – you will feel better for it

And as always – before starting a new exercise routine – check with your doctor.

Over the past few decades, antidepressant use has risen exponentially. I have always been a smart, dedicated, hard working person. I was raised to believe that those where characteristics required for success. So imagine my surprise to reach the working world and find unexceptional colleagues getting promoted above me.

There’s one memory that particularly stands out.

When I was twenty-five, I was on a team that consisted of amazingly smart, ambitious, hardworking people, plus one mediocre guy, Tom. His mediocrity stood out amongst a high-achieving team, but Tom thought he was a rock star.

Infuriatingly, all the right people noticed Tom. And they didn’t notice me.

In hindsight, the biggest difference between Tom and I was our mindset around self-promotion. We were both ambitious, but he was willing to push for it. Meanwhile, I was waiting patiently for my turn.

I couldn’t get past the idea that self-promotion was sleazy, manipulative, or desperate, so I refused to do it. I didn’t go in to a meeting with sweaty palms ready to ask for the promotion that I wanted. I just did nothing.

Strength, Endurance, and Health


Recently I have made a pretty drastic switch in my training/fitness life. It has been met with questions, opposition, teasing, warnings, concern, and a few other things, so I wanted to share my current training focus and reasoning in this blog.

Over the past many years I have been competing in the sport of Powerlifting. It has been one of the best things I have ever done and has been a very fulfilling part of my life. As an athlete all of my childhood and teenage years I had seemed to lose the competitive spirit.

When I started competing in the sport of Powerlifting I could honestly say I was underpowered. I looked fit, but didn’t have the  appropriate strength for my level of training. Over the years I had a mission to pursue strength as my primary purpose. After each powerlifting meet I reassessed my goals and set newer strength goals, continually raising my standards. In a few short years I went from a guy that had a 325lb deadlift and 285b squat, to squatting 551 and deadlifting 540. These numbers to some seem enormously strong, and to others in the powerlifting world these numbers are called warm ups. To me they were called maxes and I earned every ounce of them. I left everything out on the platform when I hit these numbers. The difference was, when I hit that 551lb squat it was one of the first times I had to take a step back and say, “do I want to squat more than this”? And the answer was “I don’t know right now.” It felt awesome…
