1. Colorful Beet Salad With Carrot, Quinoa, and Spinach

Turn a simple salad into a full-fledged meal with hearty ingredients, like beets and quinoa. You’ll be well on your way to filling your greens quota if you make this a regular staple. This recipe comes from the super popular cookbook Inspiralized, but you don’t need a spiralizer to make it—a sharp chef’s knife will do.</…

You Don’t Need to Do Big Things to Change the World

Holding the earth

“Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.” ~Mother Teresa

Life is complicated. The world’s problems are extremely complex. But what if you could help solve the world’s problems? What if you were a world changer?

Seems rather daunting, doesn’t it? Me? Change the world?! I used to feel like an ostrich, burying my head in the sand and trying to ignore all the hurt and evil in the world, because I felt helpless, like there wasn’t anything I could do.

I didn’t always feel that way though. There was a time when I felt I could make a difference…

Four months before my grandmother died, I sat by her bedside, holding her hand, and we had what turned out to be the last real conversation we had together on this earth. She looked at me and said, “I always wished I had done something great in this world.”

I told her that she had done something great! She had raised five wonderful children. She had helped and influenced so many for good during her life.

As I said those words to her, I truly believed them. I knew that by simply living a good, honest life and being kind to those around her, she had had a huge impact on the world. She had had a huge impact on me.

Yet somehow, fourteen years later, I realized I had f…

How to Make Friends in a New City

Source: http://greatist.com/live/how-to-make-friends-new-city?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Moving to a new city is exhilarating—sights to see, restaurants to discover, people to meet. Except you can’t just Yelp “best places to find friends” or stumble upon them like a great dim sum spot. As anyone who has moved knows, making friends in a town where you know no one is actually hard AF.

“In a new city, it’s easy to have the sense that everyone else is a part of something, that they already have their friends and social life,” says clinical psychologist Andrea Bonior, Ph.D., professor at Georgetown University and author of The Friendship Fix. “Feeling like an outsider can paralyze you and keep you from socializing.”

Not to mention it’s hard logistically: You don’t have your regular coffee shop or weekly workouts where you can strike up conversation with familiar faces. To top it off, between hooking up your cable, forwarding your mail, and finding the grocery store, you have a ton of things to worry about other than your social life.

“Friendships aren’t just a luxury, though—they’re extremely important to our health,” Bonior says. If you’re feeling lonely or isolated—which is easy to do after moving to a new place—you need to prioritize making friends, she adds.

While you may not meet your bestie within the first week, here are a few good ways to start filling up your friend quota.

These Naked Yoga Pictures Are Stunning and Not at All Awkward

Source: http://greatist.com/live/naked-yoga-girl-instagram-photos?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

We assumed being a spectator of naked yoga would be weird and uncomfortable, but one look at Nude Yoga Girl’s Instagram proves otherwise.

The account, which just launched in August of last year and already has more than 230,000 followers, features images of a 25-year-old female model and photographer. The black-and-white pictures are simply stunning (and a far cry from those brunch and dog photos piling up in your feed).

On her website, Nude Yoga Girl states that she does all of her own work, from the lighting and camera settings to the Photoshopping (she edits out the “necessary things,” like nipples, for Instagram and puts shadows over other places in question). Her boyfriend takes the actual photos. Interestingly, neither her Instagram nor her website reveals her true identity.

It’s not just her photos that caught our eye, though. Her captions and blog posts contain empowering messages about body positivity and self-empowerment like, “I am not what happened to me, I am what I chose to become.” Scroll through some of our favorite shots below, and then hop over to Instagram to view the rest.

A rare industry-negative study brings the score to 119/12

Source: http://www.foodpolitics.com/2016/02/a-rare-industry-negative-study-brings-the-score-to-11912/

Short-term studies of DHA ( docosahexaenoic acid, a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid) have suggested that DHA supplements promote the visual acuity of infants born prematurely.  This study, for which supplement and formula companies donated products, and in which some of the investigators had connections to those and other companies with a vested interest in the results, could not find measurable benefits of DHA supplementation by the time children reached school age.

This is a rare example of a study supported by food companies with results that must have caused much disappointment.

How rare?  Since last March, I’ve unsystematically collected 119 industry-supported studies with results that favor the sponsor’s interest (industry-positive) but have only run across or been sent 12 that do not.

Long-term effect of high-dose supplementation with DHA on visual function at school age in children born at 33 wk gestational age: results from a follow up of a randomized controlled trial. Carly S Molloy, Sacha Stokes, Maria Makrides, Carmel T Collins, Peter J Anderson, and Lex W Doyle.  Am J Clin Nutr 2016; 103:268-275 doi:10.3945/ajcn.115.114710.

Conclusion: Supplementing human milk with DHA at a dose of ~1% of total fatty acids given in the first months of life to very preterm infants does not appear to confer any long-term benefit for visual processing at school age.
Funding: Treatment and placebo capsules for the original trial were donate…

Look for the Good and You Will Find It

Rose Colored Glasses

“What we see depends mainly on what we look for.” ~John Lubbock

Have you ever noticed how as human beings, we tend to go negative?

Looking out into the world, we see the crumpled fast food bag in the street and the torn curtain in the window.

Looking into the mirror, we see the pores and dark circles under our eyes. We see the freckles and miss the dimple, or we hate the dimple and miss the smile.

Our eyes focus in on what’s wrong.

I’ve noticed it’s hard to undo this tendency in myself, though sometimes the veil drops suddenly, and I can see the beauty of the world around me.

Many years ago, a friend and I made a three-day visit to the Polish city where we were to live for a year while we taught English.

Arriving on the train, I was struck by the torn metal siding in the station and the crumbling rust of the ancient stair railings; as we walked along the sidewalk, how the entire city seemed one blocky stamped-out Soviet-era apartment building after the next.

Neither of us spoke, but I felt sure my roommate’s thoughts mirrored my own: This was where we were going to live? This worn foot sole of a town was going to be our home for a year?

Just as my mind headed in the direction of I don’t think I can…

Partner Exercises You’ve heard it before: Some things are better together. Studies show working out with a partner has more benefits than hitting the weight rack or treadmill solo. Doing a workout with a friend, coworker, or significant other can increase accountability, keep spirits high, and even spur better results. (Bonus: It can also rev libido.1 ) With that in mind, here are 29 creative exercises that prove teamwork can make your workouts a lot more fun.

Resistance Band

Partner Heel Taps

1. Partner Heel Taps

Partner A lies faceup, with Partner B standing at A’s head. A brings feet into table-top position (shins parallel to the ground). B holds both ends of the resistance band and with A’s help, carefully loops the band around A’s feet. Throughout the movement, B should be standing, core tight, knees slightly bent, arms holding the ends of the band. Once in position, A should contract core and slowly lower both heels toward the …

The Lazy Online Dating Strategy That Men Use (and Why It Works)

Source: http://greatist.com/live/lazy-approach-online-dating?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

If you’ve got two X chromosomes and have spent any time on Tinder or OkCupid, you’re accustomed to messages like “hey beautiful” or “any plans this weekend?” They’re boring, unoriginal, and likely copied and pasted. But as OkCupid co-founder Christian Rudder explains in this video, many guys often send those longer messages (“I’m a huge fan of the Knicks—I haven’t missed watching a game in 10 years and would love to take you to see one at MSG sometime.”) to multiple women. A shocking 20 percent of all messages on the site are copied. This “spray-and-pray” approach isn’t as effective as taking the time to type out a personalized note, but dating is a numbers game, and it works well enough for people to keep it up.

The Shocking Truth About America's Ethanol Law: It Doesn't Matter (For Now)

It took Sen. Ted Cruz to finally persuade me to answer a riddle that’s bothered me for years. Suppose somebody yanked away the law that currently props up the nation’s ethanol industry, as Cruz has proposed. What would actually happen?

Before we get to the answer, let me mention why it’s important, and why I’m writing about it here in The Salt. The gasoline that fuels your car is actually 10 percent ethyl alcohol, or ethanol, and that fact has had a profound impact on America’s farming landscape. As ethanol use increased over the past 15 years, dozens of giant distilleries — known, more respectably, as ethanol plants — appeared in the country’s corn belt. Feeding those distilleries is now a full-time job for roughly 35 million acres, or 55,000 square miles, of corn fields. Offhand, I can’t think of a single agricultural product that exceeds the scale of ethanol.

Corn farmers love the ethanol boom, the way any manufacturer loves a big customer. Many e…
