Farm workers in two of the nation’s most important agricultural counties joined other low-wage food sector workers on Wednesday, demanding better wages with a new Bill of Rights.

The thrust of the bill, which is aimed at workers in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties in California, is to establish a “rule of law” in the fields, observers say.

“There are rampant violations of farmworkers rights in agriculture,” says Bruce Goldstein, executive director of Farmworker Justice, a national advocacy group. “A lot of this is that a …

6 Ways to Make Dating Less Frustrating

Happy Couple

“You are strong when you know your weaknesses. You are beautiful when you appreciate your flaws. You are wise when you learn from your mistakes.” ~Unknown

Social discovery apps and online dating sites provide us with an incredible amount of dating options. It should be easier to find the right person. Ironically, having more options has led to increased impatience and high expectations among those of us searching for love.

We disregard potential friends and mates at the blink of an eye, often trading them in for the illusory search for the ideal person. I’m guilty of falling into this trap, although I never wanted to admit it. I thought I was above it but I was delusional.

I directly contributed to everything I couldn’t stand about dating in the 21st century and didn’t even realize it.

I wasn’t accountable, nor was I wise. I had no idea what I was doing, only because I never took the time to learn the art of dating and to master the art of love.

I initially read a bunch of self-help books, but that didn’t help me at all. Later, I assumed it was a numbers game and my time would come to get it right. That didn’t work either.

While at times I’ve held out, looking for the perfect partner, I’ve also rushed into relationships, only…

How Holding On to Unrequited Love Keeps You Alone and Stuck

Woman in car

“Let no one who loves be unhappy, even love unreturned has its rainbow.” ~James M. Barrie

My first experience with unrequited love took place when I was a little kid at swimming lessons.

I developed a huge crush on one of the instructors. I don’t remember his name, but I remember the excruciating feeling of absolutely adoring someone who didn’t even know I existed. I wish I could say that this was a one-time experience, but it wasn’t.

Sadly, this pattern continued for many years. I seemed to have a radar device installed in my heart that would automatically fixate on the man least likely to return my affections and bam, I had to have him. Only it never worked out.

I once spent many painful years pining away for a man I’d been crushing on, even after he’d moved across the country and married someone else. I simply could not get him out of my head.

It should be noted that I never had a real relationship with any of these men. I never dated them, kissed them, nothing. I was friends with some of them, but that was it.

Perhaps you can relate. You’ve finally met someone special after what seems like an eternity. It’s like finding an oasis in a desert of nothingness and you are beyond excited. It just has to work out with this person, so you imme…

The Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture is rethinking the way Americans eat and farm. The nonprofit, four-season farm and education center, located just 25 miles north of New York City, has set out to improve sustainable farming practices, train new farmers in regenerative techniques, and help raise public awareness in healthy, seasonal food—all for our benefit.

In this video interview, Sonima founder Sonia Jones sits down with Jill Isenbarger, the executive director at Stone Barns, which spans a stunning 80 acres, to discuss the importance of changing the pattern of growing food and eating so that we can have healthier water, healthier soil, and healthier people. Isenbarger describes the programs the center has invested in to help shape the ways we’ll eat in the future. Watch this quick clip to learn more.

How to Fight the Tired Parent Syndrome

Source: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2016/01/28/how-to-fight-the-tired-parent-syndrome/

This is a post from NF Rebel Correspondent and Fatherhood Specialist, Dan.

Creating and shaping a little one’s life is full of wonder, amazement, joy and smells – a journey which is truly gratifying and unfortunately, bloody tiring.

Any parent will tell you that as soon as Player 2 or 3 enters the game, the sleep level difficulty instantly shifts from ‘tutorial’ to ‘expert’. It’s no surprise that you see new parents in the office stumbling around like zombies by the time 2 pm comes around.

New parents have to learn to function on much less sleep, which is why we’re going to delve into this topic a little further with some tips specifically for Rebels with young ones (but with some sleep tips applicable to everyone).

Let’s pick up the master controller to our slumber, and try to help all you struggling parents, shift workers, students, and Fallout 4 players.

A Quick Jump Rope Workout

Want to burn calories fast? Jump rope for 10 minutes and torch more than 100 calories, which is equivalent to running an eight-minute-mile, according to the Compendium of Physical Studies. Best part: This aerobic exercise is totally portable (you can do it anywhere from your living room to hotel to the park), a time-saver (takes no time to get a great workout) and easier on your joints than going for a run, reports the Jump Rope Institute.

Because jumping rope for 10 minutes straight is actually much harder than it sounds, Sonima’s pain and anatomy advisor, Pete Egoscue, devised this sweet seven-minute workout plan that incorporates the rope in a realistic way that people of all fitness levels can do. Start by jumping rope for 100 reps to get your heart rate up. From there, use the rope as a prop to do fat-blasting jump rope exercises, including quick overs (lateral lifts over a bench), v-ups, step-ups, squats, and crunches. Cool down with Egoscue’s favorite stretches, like cats-and-dogs and Downward Dog.

What does “natural” mean? One more time.

Source: http://www.foodpolitics.com/2016/01/what-does-natural-mean-one-more-time/

I’ve written repeatedly about the problem of “natural” on food labels, but the issue just doesn’t go away.  It won’t, until the FDA decides to rule on what it means.

Now Consumer Reports has done a survey of public understanding of the term.

The survey reveals that 62% of respondents want foods to be “natural.”   When they see the claim on a food package, they believe it has been verified independently.  Oops.

They also believe that “natural” means no artificial ingredients (correct, according to the FDA’s non-definition) or GMOs (incorrect).  The survey confirms the idea that many people think “natural” is the same as “organic,” which it is not.

Consumers, says Consumer Reports, are naturally confused.  And why wouldn’t we be, given the products labeled as “natural” (see the examples collected by Consumer Reports).

The FDA is currently collecting its own comments on this issue.  You can weigh in until May 15.  Please do.

Exercises You Should Be Doing: Dumbbell Squeeze Press

Source: http://tonygentilcore.com/2016/01/exercises-you-should-be-doing-dumbbell-squeeze-press/

A little over a week ago I posted an article titled My Pecs Could Win a Fight Vs. a Tank Are Compound Movements Actually Making You Stronger?

In it I made the case that:

1) Compound movements (deadlift, squat, bench press, rows, chin-ups, etc) should encompass the base for most weight training programs regardless of goal(s).

2) We’re very good at compensating. I.e., not doing shit correctly.

3) Bionic Six was the most underrated Saturday morning cartoon of the 80s.1

4) As such, sometimes, it requires that ISOLATION exercises need to be given more priority because the “targeted” muscles may not be getting the stimulation required to grow (and hence, get stronger).

Nevertheless I went into some detail that, ever since I started including more isolation movements for my pectoral muscles like DB chest flyes, I’ve seen a nice jump in not only my bench press performance, but the “feel” of the movement too.

Meaning, the quality of my reps have improved and I feel more confident with a given weight which I may have been struggling with only weeks prior.

A little tip on bench press setup, as it’s something a lot of people don’t pay too much attention to…
