How to Overcome the Fear That’s Holding Back Your Business and Probably Making You an Asshole

Source: http://romanfitnesssystems.com/articles/no-fear/

NOTAFRAIDA few months back, we had the first meeting of the RFS Mastermind, during which I led 40 up-and-coming entrepreneurs through a full weekend of coaching to help build their businesses.

There were lots of lessons, a ton of actionable information, and some truly deep discussions about a myriad of topics.

Of all of the things discussed, the item that came up most frequently was fear, in all of its varied forms, and why it’s holding you back from success.

There’s the predicate fear of failure. The idea that you can work hard on a project for weeks or months, only to release it and have nothing happen. Crickets. A scary thought.

There’s also the fear of success: that your product will make a noise, make an impact, and garner attention. Now you have to be afraid of different things: that with some many eyes on it, there will be criticism; first of the project and eventually of you. And the expectation that everyone assumes you’ll be able to launch the Next Big Thing, asap. It can be a lot of pressure.

Finally, there’s fear of the unknown. You don’t know what can have the biggest impact, so you do nothing. This is by far the most common fear that holds entrepreneurs back.

This week’s five industry-funded studies. The score: 105/9.

I’ve collected five more studies funded directly or indirectly by food companies or trade associations, with results useful for marketing purposes.  This brings the total to 105 that I’ve noticed since last March versus only 9 with results that must have disappointed the sponsors.

Canned Vegetable and Fruit Consumption Is Associated with Changes in Nutrient Intake and Higher Diet Quality in Children and Adults: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2001-2010.  Marjorie R. Funding for this project was received from the Canned Food Alliance.  As senior vice president at Nutrition Impact, LLC, V. L. Fulgoni III provides food and nutrition consulting and database analyses for various members of the food and beverage industry.  No potential conflict of interest was reported by M. R. Freedman.

What I Learned From Taking a Knife Defense Class

Source: http://zenhabits.net/knife/

By Leo Babauta

I took a knife self-defense class this past weekend with my friend Jesse, and it was way harder than I expected.

Now, you might be wondering, what is a peaceful guy like Leo doing taking a knife class?

Lots of reasons, but curiosity was the biggest one. I wanted to join Jesse and do something fun together, and he wanted to take this class at Triple Aught Design, and it sounded interesting.

So I took the class, and it was intense. Hard drills for two very full days. But it was also amazing — a world-class instructor (Craig Douglas) giving us very practical tools that we drilled over and over until we could do them under pressure. I learned more in that weekend than I have in almost any other two days I can recall. The class isn’t for everyone, but I do highly recommend it (check out Craig’s company, Shivworks).

So what did I learn? A handful of incredible things:

Pushing through discomfort: The whole weekend was uncomfortable for me. Intensity, tiredness, people bigger than me wrestling me, doing drills where I get stabbed in the face (wearing a protective mask, but still scary). There were plenty of moments when I wanted to walk away, out of discomfort, but I learned about pushing through that, and that my mind’s avoidance of discomfort isn’t something I have to listen to.

I know very…

The Fundamentals of Pranayama Breathing

Watch video on YouTube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdDZeOlOhbM

There are eight limbs, or main branches, of the yoga practice. In this video, John Campbell, Ph.D., a professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia, explicates the progression of these limbs from the ethical guidelines to the physical practice to the more subtle. Once physical well-being arises from the asana, or physical practice, we arrive at the breathing practices—pranayama, in Sanskrit. Watch the video above to learn about the way in which we can use the breath to directly interface with the neural energies that manifest in the body, with technical and philosophical guidance from Campbell.

How to Master the Art of “Old School” Muscle Building

Source: http://www.bornfitness.com/old-school-muscle-building/

The movie industry has provided many indispensable lessons, but among the most important is a simple truth: nothing beats the classics. After all, many of today’s best movies are remakes from those that succeeded in the past or sequels to great concepts that everyone enjoyed.

In an age where the latest technology is favored over time-tested advice, and “get fit quick” infomercials clog our expectations with smoke and mirror sales pitches, we have a tendency to overlook the best advice simply because it’s old.

Some watches are old. Some cars are old. Hell, some might even consider Arnold old (not me, boss). But we can all agree that sometimes the most valuable things in life are those that have age, character, and a track record you can trust. Nowhere is this more accurate than the sage muscle building advice from yesteryear’s bodybuilders. As the great Mark Twain once said: “Age is just an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”

As you work to give your extra 1% this year—whether that’s starting your journey to a better body or making a push to be better than ever—one place you should not ignore the are the history books. Here are some of the best bodybuilding tips developed back-in-the-day that today’s best fitness coaches think could use a refresh in the gym. Add these to your fitness plan—including a favorite technique from Arnold—and the only thing that will be old is the body you used to ha…

10 Meditation Teachers You Should Know

Source: http://www.sonima.com/meditation/meditation-teachers/

At this point you’ve read at least one Pema Chodron book and have a favorite quote that resonates from the Dalai Lama. You follow Thich Nhat Hanh on Facebook and think he’s incredible. If you want to study regularly with someone, though, it might behoove you to consider a few more accessible teachers.

In the vein of full disclosure, some of these wonderful teachers we host at my meditation studio, MNDFL in New York City. If schedules allowed, though, I’d host them all. Here are 10 meditation teachers that may not be as well known but are deeply inspirational.

First impression: Before I ever met angel I was prompted by everyone I know to cold call her and ask her advice on starting my non-profit, the Institute for Compassionate Leadership. The subtext was, “If you want to know about the intersection of social action and meditation, this is the leading expert.” Called “the most intriguing African-American Buddhist” by Library Journal, I was delighted to also find her incredibly warm and generous when we finally hopped on the phone and became friends.
