“Eat healthy,” they said. “It’ll be easy,” they said. The bland and boring meals? They somehow forgot to mention those. We’ve tried every which way to spice up chicken breast, but sometimes we need a little something extra to keep things interesting. Which is when we turn to sauce: a healthy twist on Alfredo, the freshest chimichurri we’ve ever seen, and a stir-fry sauce that simply calls itself “the best.” Because everything’s better with a friend.

Weak sauces can see themselves out: Pistachios give this one a fantastic crunch, while avocado, parsley, cilantro, and garlic add rich flavor.

Healing Is a Journey, Not a Destination (and You’re Not Broken)

Man on a Journey

“Healing requires from us to stop struggling, but to enjoy life more and endure it less.” ~Darina Stoyanova

At the age of twenty-seven I was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis, chronic inflammation of the bladder that causes UTI like symptoms. I am now twenty-nine and still experiencing symptoms, but I have improved greatly.

I have spent that time searching for the answers to this medical enigma, for which doctors claim there is no cure. At first my research led me on a path of frustration and hopelessness, until I realized that my mindset was what was holding me back from healing.

I then decided to change my expectation of healing from “I must be cured to be happy” to “I am enjoying my healing journey and look for happiness in any moment I can.”

As a fellow chronic condition sufferer, I understand how overwhelming that statement can be. It is difficult to accept that we are in pain. However, just making that mindset a part of your routine will help open your mind to finding healing modalities that will work for you and help take the pressure off.

Feeling like you need to find a cure is a lot of pressure to put on one person dealing with a chronic illness, and most people who develop these illnesses usually are characterized as perfec…

The Most Popular Running Songs in the World

Source: http://greatist.com/move/spotify-running-playlist-top-songs?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

If your New Year’s resolution includes crushing a 5K, training for a marathon, or just logging more miles, you’ll probably need some motivation to get there. To help, Spotify put together a playlist of the most-played running songs in 2015.

The music-streaming service looked at popular songs on Spotify Running playlists as well as users’ personal playlists with translations of the word “running” in the title. Fun fact: Seven of the top 10 songs come from female artists, including Queen Bey, Sia, Missy Elliott, and TLC.

All you need to do is grab your new sneakers, turn up the volume, and hit ground the running.

The Surprising Power of Being OK With Your Body

If you’re alive, female, and over the age of 11, you’ve no doubt gathered by now that “loving your body” is something you should try to do. But the reasons why—touted in all those well-intentioned-but-pat magazine stories and inspirational Pinterest quotes—leave me cold. What, exactly, does a person get out of liking her body more?

A ton, as it turns out. A growing body of research pinpoints links between seemingly unrelated elements of physical and mental health to being OK with the shape of your body. Notice I’m not saying “loving” your body. Because honestly, I believe it’s unrealistic to love everything about ourselves, all the time. What are we, the models in those bandwagony “Love My Body” Victoria’s Secret ads? (Which were ridiculous, by the way—how is seeing Alessandra Ambrosio and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley writhe around in underwear mouthing “I love my body” helpful or relatable to any regular woman?)

Anyhow, for many of us, learning to feel positive or even neutral about our physical form may take some work—but I’ve dug up three very concrete reasons why it’s worth it.

Which Workout Is Your State Obsessed With?

Source: http://greatist.com/move/most-popular-workouts-every-state?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Some of us swear by barre, while others can’t get enough of Soul Cycle. So it’s no surprise that our favorite form of exercise is different from our neighbor. Vox analyzed Google search trends to determine the most searched workouts in each state. Here’s what we learned:

We drank the celeb Kool-Aid. Utah wanted to work out like Kate Hudson and Wisconsin searched for The Biggest Loser trainer Jillian Michaels. And in a surprising showing of bipartisanship, politicos in D.C. searched most for Rep. Paul Ryan’s workout.

This was the year of HIIT. High-intensity workouts were popular across the country. The top search in New Jersey, Missouri, and Vermont was some variation of a HIIT workout.

Some workouts are far from traditional. Oregonians stayed #hip with the dead bug exercise, while pole dancing workouts were popular among Floridians.

Redefining “Superhero”

Source: http://romanfitnesssystems.com/articles/redefining-superhero/

The heroes of comics and storybooks are dead. The power to change the world now rests in the hands of everyday guys like you and me, and the time for a new, more relatable hero has arrived.

superhero1As a boy, I used to daydream about being a superhero. I’d spend hours creating imaginary worlds where the dragon needed slayin’ and the girl needed savin’.

These superheroes always had a mystical attribute that set them apart from the mortals around them; my superpowers always resembled The Man of Steel’s.

I was particularly drawn to the duality of character: Clark Kent, the quiet, reserved, nerdy journalist that blended into any crowd, and Superman, the seemingly immortal superhuman who fulfilled my boyhood dreams.

In Superman, I found hope that someone as ordinary and constrained as myself could be capable of a greater good, that despite my shortcomings and inadequacies, I, too, could be a superhero.

But as I grew from a boy to an adult, and as an adult became a young dad, I experienced the inevitable challenges that we all go through, and reality replaced youthful fantasy.

Tied down with a family and struggling to make ends meet, I bought the lie that I wasn’t worthy or capable of being a hero. I fel…

Here's Why Your Nose Always Runs When It's Cold

Source: http://greatist.com/live/nose-run-cold?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Ever wonder why we can’t seem to stop our noses from running the second the thermometer drops below 32 degrees? This video from the Sci Show says we should blame biology and physics: Our body produces more mucus when it’s cold to keep our nasal cavities moist (how delightful), and water droplets form when the hot air in our lungs meets the frigid temps outside. Combined, they get our nose running faster than a marathon runner.

How to Find the Best Yoga Teacher to Guide Your Practice

Source: http://www.sonima.com/yoga/find-a-yoga-teacher/

Yoga is now nearly as popular as golf, according a recent report, which means more people are seeking guidance on a path of stretching their bodies, breath, and minds. The number of people trained to teach is also trending upward, as the quantity of newly registered instructors jumped 18% from 2008 to 2014. With so many teachers available, you might think it’s easier than ever to find a yoga teacher, but the reality is a little more complex.

As the volume of teachers increases, standardization and quality of study with experienced teachers is critical to ensure your safety and the integrity of an ancient practice. While some universal standards exist, you’ll come across teachers with widely varying experience levels from many different schools of thought. How can you assess whether teachers are qualified to teach new yogis, or yogis with a regular practice looking to deepen their studies? Which yoga styles and teaching approaches are right for you, now and in the future?

You could just try classes and see what you find, but here are some ways to focus your search, so your journey is most fruitful.

Consider the Importance of Style and Lineage

Yoga is an ancient philosophy with many components passed down from teacher to student for thousands of years. In the Western world, millions first see it as sweaty, physically demanding asana (poses), often meeting a need for exercise, pain prevention, and stress relief. Most practices fall under the u…
