How Long Does It Really Take to Lose a Skill?

Source: http://greatist.com/discover/how-quickly-lose-skill?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Ride a Bike Ever wonder why you have no problem riding a bike even though you haven’t hopped on a two-wheeler since you were a teen, but you can’t remember high school math for the life of you? The publication Hopes&Fears spoke with professors, data scientists, and even a Buddhist dharma teacher to get their take on why we lose certain skills but not others. Here are our favorite tidbits (though it’s totally worth checking out the full story):

“The length of time it takes to lose a skill is proportional to the time it took you to learn the skill. We see this in our lives all the times with the example of riding a bike or playing a musical instrument that we practiced for hours in our childhood. We don’t really lose these skills, although like our old bikes they ‘rust’ a little.” — Timothy A. Pychyl, Ph.D., psychology professor, Carleton University

“That really depends on the type of skill we’re talking about. There are specific skills like riding a bicycle or unicycle, juggling, and swimming where you fail miserably at every attempt, and then suddenly… voilà, you can perform the task perfectly. There’s no real in-between ‘I’m getting a little better’ process. These skills tend to stay with you longer. Skills that you can incrementally get better at te…

Announcing the Level Up Your Life Pre-Order Bonuses (and Book Tour!)

Source: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2015/12/14/announcing-the-level-up-your-life-pre-order-bonuses-and-book-tour/

For seven years we’ve been building a Rebellion.

We started in our small corner of the internet, quietly exchanging messages, trying to figure out how to get healthy on our own.

In this humble HQ, our Rebels began to stir. Our forces grew. A Rebel Army formed.

Now, everything is about to change. And yes, obviously I’m partly talking about the impending release of the new Star Wars film.

But maybe more importantly (gasp), the Rebellion’s time to strike has come. Our team has been furiously working behind the scenes to prepare a multi-stage battle plan to strike at the heart of the Empire.

And I need your help.

The Big Announcement: The First Nerd Fitness Book

SteveKambBookSitting2

Team Nerd Fitness has been working in secret on a plan for world domination – to spread the message of the Rebellion far and wide and help those living unfulfilled, unhealthy lives find their path again.

What’s phase one of this battle plan? It’s a book (a real one!), called Level Up Your Life.

So what’s the book about? Simple: It’s a strategy guide for life that teaches you, step-by-step, how to turn yourself into a real-life superhero. I wanted to quash the conventional wisdom that says fulfilling lives full of adv…

A Simple Phrase That Can Prevent Arguments and Resentment

Communication

“It’s not the events of our lives that shape us, but our beliefs as to what those events mean.” ~Tony Robbins

I am always making up stories about what others think of me or what they really meant when they made that comment. And I typically make up the worst case scenario. According to my brain, everyone is mean-spirited and ridiculing me.

This is not an uplifting way to live one’s life. The pessimistic stories I create are generated in part by my low self-esteem, and by convincing myself they’re true, I continue to fuel it. My constantly negative perceptions affect my relationships with others and overall mood in a harmful way.

I recently experienced a huge breakthrough in regard to this aspect of my thought processes. I am a huge fan of Dr. Brené Brown’s work and recently read her newest book Rising Strong. One of my biggest takeaways was this one phrase that will improve your relationships: “The story I’m making up…”

Why We Make Up Stories

As humans, our brains make up stories. We automatically search for meaning. If there is a lack of information, then we will try to fill in that gap.

Studies have shown that we like stories to make sense or fulfill a pattern, and we will use our own experiences as r…

The One Thing Young Athletes Are Lacking

Source: http://tonygentilcore.com/2015/12/the-one-thing-young-athletes-are-lacking/

Spoiler Alert: the answer is . . . Resiliency.

Not lack of coaching, availability of fitness equipment, or the support of overzealous parents who feel their little Jimmy or Tiffany could be the next Mike Trout or Heather O’Reilly.

Foodist Approved: Black Rice Porridge with Sautéed Apples Recipe

Source: http://summertomato.com/black-rice-porridge-recipe/

black rice breakfast bowl

Porridge made from black rice, also called “forbidden rice,” is a creative and delicious alternative to oatmeal.

This recipe was inspired by a memorable brunch I had a couple months ago at a tiny neighborhood restaurant, The Sudra, in SE Portland. The Sudra is beloved for its vegan, deeply spiced Indian cuisine.

Black rice has a rich, nutty flavor, chewy texture, and powerful color, while sautéed apples spiked with cinnamon and cardamom take on a beautiful crimson hue, making this bowl impressive enough to serve for weekend brunch.

You can use any type of milk, but for a creamy treat I recommend making it with rich coconut milk. Unsweetened canned coconut milk is available at most grocery stores.

To be able to prepare this breakfast in less than 15 minutes, cook the rice the night before while you’re cleaning up from dinner.

Black Rice Porridge with Sautéed Apples

Yield: serves 4

Ingredients

1 cup black rice, rinsed and drained
1 tablespoon coconut oil
2 Granny Smith (green) apples, peeled, cored, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom, optional
pinch fine sea salt
1 1/2 cups milk of choice (coconut milk recommended)
2 tablespoo…

See All the Ways Not Having Enough Sex Affects a Relationship

Source: http://greatist.com/discover/sex-important-healthy-relationships-video?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Saying you’re not having enough sex sounds needy. (Aren’t there bigger issues in this world than whether you’re getting hot and heavy on the reg?) To answer the cynical voice in your head: Yes, there are. But as this video shows, doing the deed is essential to healthy relationships. And a lack of sex is a major reason why couples break up.

Another five sponsored studies with expected results. The score: 85:6.

Source: http://www.foodpolitics.com/2015/12/another-five-sponsored-studies-with-expected-results-the-score-856/

These are coming in so quickly that I am having a hard time keeping up with them.  Note that the first three are sponsored by Coca-Cola and that some of the investigators were involved with the ill-fated Global Energy Balance Network, now defunct.  As we now know from the e-mails obtained by the Associated Press, the statement that “the sponsor played no role…” is not necessarily correct.

As for the score: since mid-March, I have collected 85 sponsored studies with results just as the sponsor wanted, versus 6 with results that must have disappointed.  But stay tuned: tomorrow I will post 3 more in the disappointing category.

Low levels of physical activity are associated with dysregulation of energy intake and fat mass gain over 1 year.  Robin P Shook, Gregory A Hand, Clemens Drenowatz, James R Hebert, Amanda E Paluch, John E Blundell, James O Hill, Peter T Katzmarzyk, Timothy S Church,11 and Steven N Blair.  Am J Clinical Nutrition November 11, 2015 as doi: 10.3945/ajcn.115.115360.

Conclusions: These results suggest that low levels of physical activity are a risk factor for fat mass gain. In the current sample, a threshold for achieving energy balance occurred at an activity level corresponding to 7116 steps/d, an amount achievable by most adults.
Funding: Supported by an unrestricted research grant from The Coca-Cola Company.
