A Day in the Life

Source: http://www.fannetasticfood.com/2016/04/27/a-day-in-the-life-3/

It’s been a while since I did a Day in the Life post, so let’s toss one in the mix, shall we? Here’s what I was up to yesterday. :)

5:52 a.m. – Alarm goes off (the extra 2 minutes makes the difference, I swear). Get up, change into running clothes.

6:05 a.m. – Eat a snack (a waffle with a smear of almond butter + about 4 oz of water mixed with Vega Pre-Workout Energizer – love that stuff).

6:20 a.m. – Out the door!

6:30 – 7:45 a.m. – Track workout! I do about a half mile warm up jog and some stretches/strides before we officially kick off around 6:40.

The coaches had us do 1200’s (3 laps around the track, or 3/4 mile) with 2 minutes rest in between each. I do 5 of them and then do a cool down jog.

7:55 a.m. – Arrive back home. Use my foam roller for a bit and stretch out, then hop in the shower. Eat a banana and an almond butter Perfect Bar (these are super hearty/more satisfyi…

An Introduction to the Bandhas

Within the yoga practice, there are three “locks,” or bandhas, that work to support, structure, and soften any given pose. Bandhas help to control the flow of warmth and energy through the body on an internal level, and help to complete postures and create more stability on an external level. This overview will give you the basic tools you need to go deeper in your yoga practice.

Recent Eats + Weekend Reading

Source: http://www.fannetasticfood.com/2016/04/29/recent-eats-weekend-reading/

Hi friends – happy Friday! I’m getting ready to head to the airport in a few minutes for my Vermont half marathon adventures (see Wednesday’s Day in the Life post for more details!) but wanted to pop in quickly to say hi before I go. As always, see what I’m up to on Instagram, and I’ll be back Monday with a recap! :)

I started my Friday with an old fave – my Flour Free Breakfast Pancake. This breakfast is always a win.

I spent the morning tackling my inbox and to do list, and then broke for a training session with Paul from Capital Energy Training late morning. I didn’t get any pictures today but I’m still really enjoying our sessions and finding them really helpful in terms of fixing up my tight/sore hip situation! We’ve started working more into my crazy tight shoulders/neck now, too. Today’s session focused on loosening me up for Sunday’s half marathon!

Post-workout lunch was another standard classic: a big grain salad bowl. <…

Why Swearing Really Can Kill Pain

Source: http://greatist.com/live/why-swearing-is-a-painkiller?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

While you might eventually grab an ice pack or see a doctor when you’re in pain, dropping a few f-bombs is your best initial defense. According to this video by AsapTHOUGHT, swearing while in pain allows us to tolerate more discomfort for a longer period of time, a phenomenon known as lalochezia. Swearing is linked to emotion, and since many swear words come from taboo topics (sex, poop), there’s something exciting about saying them. When we yell out these emotionally charged words, it sparks a biological response in our bodies to help us tolerate pain. But you can build up a tolerance to lalochezia—the more you swear the less it helps. So be sure to use your sh!ts and fu*cks sparingly.

This week nutrition facts are BS, 1 minute to better health, and how fructose alters brain genes.

Too busy to read them all? Try this awesome free speed reading app I just discovered to read at 300+ wpm. So neat!

If you follow me on Delicious you’ve probably noticed the site has been down all week. I have no idea what’s going on, but hopefully they’ll have it resolved soon. I also share links on Twitter @summertomato and the Summer Tomato Facebook page. I’m very active on all these sites and would love to connect with you.

Isagenix Reviews

Source: http://www.livelifeactive.com/2016/04/29/isagenix-reviews/

It’s been a while since I put together a list of Isagenix Reviews from clients of mine and others around the web so I figured It would be a helpful post for anyone who’s on the fence about starting with the Isagenix diet or should I call it a lifestyle?  I’ll go with lifestyle :)

Isagenix Reviews

The first Review comes from a review site called MealReplacementShakes.com.  They review tons of different meal replacement shakes and they give Isagenix 8/10 stars!  Check out their review below.

Isagenix Reviews

Isagenix Isalean meal replacement shake is a somewhat lesser known than others that we’ve reviewed and that are on the market. That doesn’t speak to its quality or effectiveness, it just means chances are greater that consumers haven’t heard of it and don’t know anything about it.

Isagenix Isalean uses what it calls an Exclusive Myo-Isalean Complex, which is a combination of whey protein concentrate, milk protein concentrate, and low-heat nonfat dry milk. One of the most important parts of any meal replacement shake is the protein type and content. Protein usually has the highest content in a meal replacement shake because it fi…

Dressing for Your Body: How the Three Somatotypes Influence Your Style

Source: http://romanfitnesssystems.com/articles/somatotype-style/

styelguieWe all have certain needs that we want to be met.

For most of us, me included, it’s about being impressed with yourself and your life, and finding someone to share it with.

That’s what the gym symbolizes: we, the dedicated bros and broettes, find meaning in our workouts because they take us one step closer to being able to look in the mirror and smirk, feeling confident in who we are.

Feel that? Life is good.

Spend enough time under the bar and you’re bound to have decent results. Readers of the Roman Empire are familiar with the golden ratio: the perfect proportions between shoulders, waist, and hips. For guys, we call this the Adonis Index and for women, the Venus Index.

I don’t think looking good is a joke; it’s all about precision and exactitiudes.

There’s biological evidence that we’re enamored with people who resemble the aforementioned ratios. Women cling to men because broad shoulders represent strength and protection while wide hips and a lean waist instinctually tells a man that a woman is fertile.

Some of us are gifted with good genetics and inherently start closer to these ideals, but whatever your body looks like unclothed, it’s just as — if not more — important to dress it cor…

Organic Life: Eight books about organic food systems

Source: http://www.foodpolitics.com/2016/04/organic-life-eight-books-about-organic-food-systems/

I did an interview last year with Rebecca Straus of Organic Life about books of interest to the magazine’s readers.  I never heard what happened to it but learned from a recent tweet that it is now available online.  So consider this a late catch up.

Marion Nestle’s Favorite Organic Books: Eight reads to get you thinking about where your food is coming from.  Organic Life, September 11, 2015.

Food advocate Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition and food studies at New York University, has long been outspoken in her support of organic farming and opposition to GMO crops. Her books and articles on how science, marketing, and society impact food choices and obesity have influenced everyone from Michelle Obama to Michael Pollen, who named her the second most powerful foodie in America.  Her new book Soda Politics: Taking on Big Soda (and Winning), comes out in October. But even when she’s busy writing, Nestle takes time to review other recent titles on her popular blog, Food Politics. “I’m overwhelmed by the avalanche of outstanding books that I run across or that get sent to me,” she says. But when forced to choose, she settled on these eight as some of the best writing and original research in the bunch, adding, “They deserve much more attention than they’ve received.”

The Best Way to Whiten Your Teeth

Source: http://greatist.com/live/best-way-to-whiten-your-teeth?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

If you’re like most of us here at Greatist, braces and retainers still plague your middle school memories. The uncomfortable metal contraptions were the first step in a lifelong pursuit of the perfect smile, followed by making those pearly whites, well, white.

Not all oral-care options are created equal though. This video from Reactions explains how teeth-whitening actually works. Our teeth are naturally white, but over time they become stained with food remnants and other foreign particles. Most whitening products use hydrogen peroxide to remove color from these pigments, the same way we bleach stains out of clothes. Other products will give the teeth a blue tint, temporarily counteracting their usual yellow appearance. They’re all safe, but only some whitening products actually work.

Our takeaways: Mouthwash doesn’t work well, while whitening toothpaste is only a temporary fix. Your best bet for long-lasting white teeth is brushing and flossing regularly, as well as whitening strips or a trip to the dentist.
