How Running in Skintight Leggings Changed My Relationship With My Body

“Look at that ass in yoga pants!” This brilliant remark is brought to me by one of the five young men who have chosen to harass me during my afternoon run.

It is an ordinary run—four or five miles along the streets of my neighborhood. It is ordinary, too, that I am being harassed.

I run by the local college, where the men call out to me, yelling in vivid detail what they want to do to me, what they think of my body, what they want me to do to them. They yell louder and follow me for a few steps as I run past. They are laughing.

My heart beats fast and hard against my chest as I try to strike that balance between hightailing it out of there while also not letting them see that I’m afraid.

But I am afraid. I am afraid and humiliated and so fed up with being confronted by this almost every time I run outside that I consider turning around and just laying into them, really letting them have it.

I know exactly what I would say. But I also know that I am not safe, and so I just keep running.

My Body Was Not My Own Running Tights

Men started sexually harassing me when I was eight years old, and it hasn’t let up since. From a young age I felt that my body and sexuality were not wholly mine. Instead, they were products to be assesse…

In Shakespeare's Plays, Mealtimes Were A Recipe For Drama

Editor’s note: This week, to mark the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, we will be running a series of stories examining the links between food and the Bard.

Anyone who has ever spent Thanksgiving with family knows that the table is a great place for drama. We talk, we shout, we love, we fight — or sit in silence and seethe. And we’re all stuck there, gnawing on our turkey legs, playing out our usual roles, unable to just walk offstage.

That is the very idea William Shakespeare exploited to fill theaters.

It’s difficult to name a play in which Shakespeare doesn’t cook up a bit of conflict around the table. It’s a good excuse for the playwright to get a lot of people onstage at the same time, to bring friend and stranger together, and to do it all in a close space where the characters have no choice but to talk and interact. And create dramatic tension.

In The Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio wants to tame the headstrong Katherine, so he steals her away between their wedding and reception, onl…

We Won The Championships!! Plus Meet My New Favorite Water Cooler!

Source: http://www.livelifeactive.com/2016/04/18/won-championships-plus-meet-new-favorite-water-cooler/

Okay so there’s something I’ve been hiding from you guys lately.  Well two things actually.  This wasn’t intentional, it just hasn’t come up in any of my recent posts but now I will share.

I’m a champion and in love with a water cooler.

Did I just win the award for the most random sentence you’ve read today? I think I probably did.

Let me take a step back and explain…

So, I dusted off my old soccer cleats and shinguards and joined a women’s soccer league in Charleston!  If you know me, you know I played soccer my whole life from age 5 until senior year in high school.  After college, I became a soccer coach and personal trainer.  Since then I’ve dabbled in co-ed leagues here and there but hadn’t been on a team for about the last 5 years.

Well I joined the Charleston Women’s Soccer League a few months ago and played in the spring season.

I was nervous at first to see if I could get back out there and do okay and guess what?!?!

Playing soccer again was like riding a bike!

I’m not going to lie I was totally out of shape cardio wise…and still don’t feel like I could make it through a whole game without feeling winded but that’s why I love soccer.  It’s such an unbelievable full body workout!  After the first couple games, my whole body was sore.

I wore my Apple Watch one soccer game and found that I ran 3 miles in one game.  BOOM!

Anyway….

Sausage and Cheese Breakfast Pita

Source: http://www.bornfitness.com/breakfast-pita/

When you think of healthy breakfast, “sausage, cheese, and pita” usually aren’t the first foods that come to mind. That just goes to show you how many enjoyable, healthy meals you might be missing. Feel free to blame the diet industry, but the reality is you can easily transform some of your favorite foods into a healthy option, which is exactly what we’ve done with this breakfast pita.

In this healthy recipe, you mix foods with a lot of flavor—cough, cough…sausage and cheese—with those that tend to be more bland and boring—egg whites and spinach. That’s the secret to success in any eating plan: make it flavorful and enjoyable so you look forward to your meals.

It’s not about whether you are on a “diet” or not; it’s about making nutrient-dense food taste great while also fueling your body with what it needs to lose fat and gain lean muscle.

Want to enjoy this breakfast pita every day? You can because it’s full of protein and packed with nutrients. Best of all? Our breakfast pita can be ready to eat in less than 10 minutes, meaning it’s perfect for your on-the-go lifestyle.

Why it’s a Healthy Recipe

In order to keep the calories low and the flavor high, we substituted the fat in an egg yolk for the fat in chicken sausage and cheese. And if you want more calories, simply keep the egg yolks.

The chicken sausage is a great alternative to pork sausage because it’s lower fat. [Note:…

“It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this.” -The Old Man, The Legend of Zelda (NES).

It’s time to go to battle, infiltrating an compound full of muggles and carry out your mission that helps you level up your life and helps further the cause of the Nerd Fitness Rebellion.

You, a Nerd Fitness Rebel, are going to train in an commercial gym.

They’ll expect you to use their rigid weight machines, expensive cardio equipment, and ab torture devices machines; they’ll gleefully take you on a tour of all the AMAZING amenities you clearly need in a gym, and expect you to fall in with the masses.

You nod politely, and then go about the business of actually changing your life in an enjoyable, fun way.

You see, like Link in The Legend of Zelda, you’ve come prepared. You have a compact gym bag that comes with you every day with the right items required to level up your life.

I’m not talking about the latest and greatest pair of spandex or the best lifting gloves (in fact, I’ll tell you why you shouldn’t wear them).

Instead, I’m going to walk you through what you should be bringing with you to the gym.

Note: this advice will revolve around best equipment for people looking to use free weight and bodyweight training in the gym primarily.

FitBits | Think Less Do More
The first three lines are always the hardest.

When I was at school, college and uni I used to sit and stare at an empty sheet of paper or blank screen and type/delete/retype the opening sentence of an essay or article over and over again.

I’d spend ages, reading, researching and scribbling reams and reams of notes in different coloured pens in an attempt to organise the thoughts that spilled freely from my mind. And it was only once I’d got past the magic three lines that I was able to find my flow and keep writing.

For me, writing is something I just have to do to stay sane.

I need to sit and get it all down. I remember writing stories from a very young age. Sometimes I’d scrawl pages and pages until my hands hurt, only stopping when I physically couldn’t write any more.

It was engrained into me.

Just like exercise is now. I never used to be active, but I can’t be anything else any more. I need to move. I have to get outside. I must sweat. And breathe. And run, and ride.

I don’t do very well with being told I can’t do the things I love. I want to do it all. That’s why being told I couldn’t fight last month after t…

The Aspects of Daily Life That Affect Sleep Quality

When you can’t sleep at night it’s easy to blame the things affecting you in the moment—churning thoughts, a restless body, or uncomfortable surroundings. While these things certainly have an effect on your sleep schedule, it’s important to remember that the quality of your sleep is a reflection of the quality of your daytime. If your day is full of stress, anxiety, hostility or other negative emotions, then all of that will be reflected in the quality of your sleep.

In this video, Deepak Chopra, M.D., explains the ways we can adjust our day-to-day routine to encourage better rest at night. After 6 p.m. it’s important to minimize stimulating activities and focus on things that soothe the mind. According to Chopra, there’s also an optimal time to go to bed, after which the body naturally enters a state of stimulation. Find out what time you should go to bed, and learn about the other habits that affect sleep quality, when you watch the video above.
