Nutra-Ingredients special edition: world malnutrition

Source: http://www.foodpolitics.com/2016/01/nutra-ingredients-special-edition-world-malnutrition/

What is the role of the food industry in helping to address world malnutrition?  This collection of articles from Nutra-Ingredients.com begins with a viewpoint from Nestlé (no relation), the world’s largest food company.

Nestlé: Profit is not a dirty word in the race against global malnutrition

Big food companies like Nestlé are oft-criticised for being a factor in the spread of non-communicable diseases like obesity and diabetes with less healthy food offerings but all are engaged in shifting their portfolios to the healthier end of the spectrum, and their capacity to deliver benefits with fortified offerings to malnourished populations can be overlooked.“The food industry is a commercial enterprise – that won’t change – but it has immense power to bring nutrients to the populations that needs them the most.

Foodist Approved: Super Healthy Bolognese Sauce Recipe

Healthy bolognese with extra vegetables

Healthy bolognese with extra vegetables

As winter drags on you’ll find yourself craving hearty food—I know I do this time of year. Sometimes nothing will satisfy that hunger except a classic bowl of spaghetti topped with a rich meat sauce.

My homemade bolognese sauce is loaded with vegetables, but won’t disappoint the meat lover in your family. I created this recipe for Lily, my 18-month-old who absolutely loves pasta, as a means to sneak more veggies into her life.

I prefer to make bolognese sauce with 85% lean grass-fed ground beef, but any ground meat will work (just not the really lean stuff). Try making the sauce with ground bison, lamb or turkey, or go meatless and swap in tempeh (grind the tempeh in a food processor).

This sauce is memorable served on top of pasta, but you can also serve it on top of spaghetti squash for a lighter meal. The gluten-free crowd will love it spooned on top of brown rice or a baked potato.

I highly recommend making a double batch and freezing half so you get two family dinners for the time-commitment of one.

“Don’t be afraid of death; be afraid of an unlived life. You don’t have to live forever; you just have to live.” ~Natalie Babbitt

Recently I was searching for information online about a friend of mine who I lost touch with about a decade ago.

Pam and I went to psychology graduate school together in the early nineties and stayed in touch for a few years after that. But in those pre-Facebook days it was easy to lose touch with people, and Pam and I eventually drifted apart.

Curious about what my friend was up to, I typed her name into Google. Imagine my shock when I found her obituary. It turns out that she had died three years ago from colon cancer at the still young age of forty-four.

Even though Pam and I lost touch a long time ago, learning about her death hit me hard. Months later, I’m still shocked that she’s no longer with us.

Pam’s death was also a wake-up call for me. As a gift to future generations, I want to use my life to create a powerful legacy and to make a positive contribution to the world. Yet, up to this point in my life, I haven’t taken intentional actions that will create the type of legacy that I want.

And while I hope to live for at least another forty years, the date of my death is outside of my control. Like my f…

Cultivating Purpose: Let Go of “Should” and Do What You Love

Stop Dreaming

“Your daily life is your temple and your religion. When you enter into it take with you your all.” ~Khalil Gibran

In my mid twenties I found out I had a mass on my pituitary. I was told it could be cancer, it could be benign, it could be a cyst—we wouldn’t know until my doctor performed a surgery to remove it. This surgery meant I could go blind, be on lifelong hormone replacement therapy, or even die.

I don’t want you to wait until something bad happens to dedicate time to things you love.

Countless people I meet share the same story over and over again when I tell them I’m an artist:

“I was told I was good at drawing, but Dad wanted me to be a doctor,” “It reminds me of my love of the theatre. I keep thinking about joining our local community theatre, but I never seem to get round to doing it.”

It seems calling oneself an artist triggers a longing for creative expression in many.

How can we find and follow our inner guide?

While waiting for the big day of surgery, I hid away in the basement of my sister’s home. I painted for perhaps my last time. I painted for the pure joy of painting. For perhaps the first time in my life I didn’t hear a bunch of “shoulds” running around my mind. I painted as a channel, connected to whatever…

Luckily these healthy recipes are perfectly portioned for two servings. That means if you live with someone, you’re set, and if you live alone, you have both dinner and leftovers for lunch tomorrow!

Stir-fries are a staple, but it’s easy to fall into a rut with them. Mix things up with this recipe, which calls for marinating sirloin in a sweet, spicy soy sauce. Let that get happy while you’re at work, then come home and cook the meat with some veggies and top over brown rice for a simple yet flavorful dinner.

Create Your Free Nerd Fitness Character Now!

Source: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2016/01/18/create-your-free-nerd-fitness-character-now/

Life is game! Join me?

Almost six years ago I wrote an article called “Real-Life Role Playing: What is your Profession?” and then turned my life into a game, tracking my life quests with pen and paper (and text). I had so much fun, but I knew it was just the start. I had a dream that one day, you’d be able to log in to Nerd Fitness, create your character and your own Epic Quest list, check off those quests as you complete them, earn XP, level up, and share this profile with your friends.

We’ve been quietly (and furiously) working behind the scenes for the past year on this feature. You can now create a full Nerd Fitness Avatar and actually turn your life into an RPG! Now that my book Level Up Your Life is officially out nationwide, I’m so pumped that we can make this a big part of Nerd Fitness moving forward! This character is also going to tie into a big portion of the Nerd Fitness ecosystem over the next number of years.

Speaking of Level Up Your Life, if you’ve read the book, can you please go leave an honest review over on Amazon? More than ever these reviews can be the difference for somebody who isn’t familiar with Nerd Fitness or my writing! THANK YOU!

Note: This is a crazy, awesome, evolving platform; consider this current launch a version 1.0.

Healthy Barbecue Zucchini Chips

Source: http://www.sonima.com/food/barbecue-zucchini-chips/

A food dehydrator seems like something only raw foodies and extremely experimental eaters would find essential in their kitchens—especially at the $200 price tag some models tout. But when I learned of Excalibur’s 6-tray dehydrator, which retails for a modest $39.95, I was intrigued to learn more about the possibilities of dehydrating. It turns out, you can dehydrate pretty much anything, from meats to nuts to fresh produce. Fruits and veggies are a good entry point, and while they certainly can be enjoyed plain, I thought dressing them up with a touch of seasoning would make them a little more exciting. These sweet and savory barbecue zucchini chips make a perfect snack when you’re craving something crunchy and savory. Plus, you’ll take in a serving of vegetables, zero fat, and almost no sodium with each handful.

This Sex Is Better at Fighting off The Flu, According to Research

Source: http://greatist.com/live/man-flu?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Dudes may have to take more caution to avoid getting sick with good old influenza. A new study from Johns Hopkins University found that estrogen helps protect women from the flu. The hormone slows the replication process of the virus and comes with some antiviral effects too. So even if women do come down with the flu, it’s usually less severe.

These findings suggest that estrogen could be part of flu treatment in the future. And maybe there’s some truth to the idea of the “man cold” after all.

Why Some People Are Internet Trolls (and How to Stop Them)

Source: http://greatist.com/live/science-of-internet-trolls?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Some people feel the need to comment on everything—and we’re not talking about your aunt who ends every message with “XO from all of us.” About 5 percent of people online self-identify as trolls (a.k.a. those annoying commenters who attack anything and everything on the Web). This video from AsapSCIENCE discusses research that found trolls share “dark traits,” like narcissism, psychopathy, and sadism. Unfortunately, these people aren’t so nice IRL either.

Most of us feel guilty inflicting pain on others, but sadistic people actually enjoy making others suffer. So when you engage with the haters, you’re feeding into their nastiness. The more you reply, the harsher the comments will get. So next time you’re being trolled, just take a page out of Taylor Swift’s book.
