Will Farmed Fish Ever Be Good for You or the Planet?

Source: http://www.sonima.com/food/farmed-fish/

When you think about sustainable, healthy seafood, you may picture fisherman line-catching trout splashing in pristine waters. Fish farms, on the other hand, likely bring to mind images of crowded swarms in murky pens.

And while the haze of distrust around aquaculture (fish farming) is justified by complex, global considerations, there are indications that small but important strides are being made toward producing fish that’s better for you and the planet.

Earlier this year, Whole Foods Market rolled out a new sustainable farmed salmon it brought to market with Blue Circle Foods and BioMar. In the same week, popular salad chain Sweetgreen announced it was adding farmed steelhead (a fish that resembles salmon but is actually a type of trout) to its menu, after the provider, Pacific Seafood, became the first farm of its kind to receive Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification. “We’ve gone from about 700 certified facilities at the end of 2014 to 1,172 at the end of February 2016,” says Steven Hedlund, communications manager for Global Aquaculture Alliance, the organization behind BAP.

While certifications and standards vary in their criteria, sustainable fish farming generally minimizes disease, damage to surrounding ecosystems, and the amount of wild fish used as feed (in addition to using healthy feed alternatives). While creating systems that meet those standards is possible, they’ve generally been the exception to…

PornHub Is Making a Fitbit for Your Sex Life

Well damn. We’ve got to give credit where credit is due, and this ad for BangFit—basically a Fitbit for your sex life created by the great minds at PornHub—is hilarious. Can you imagine competing against your friends and their partners to see who gets the best workout during sex?

Guys have to strap the BangFit band (it looks like a cross between a fanny pack and a wrestling belt with a compartment for your smartphone) around their waist before they get hot and heavy. The app scores sexercizes based on how well you perform them, so you can brag about how healthy your sex life is on social media.

With a fully functioning website, BangFit could be the future of health-conscious sex. But since the band is sold out, we’re more inclined to believe that this is just an exceptionally smart marketing stunt. But that doesn’t mean companies like Fitbit and Jawbone (an appropriate name) can’t use it as inspiration for future products.

Friends: have you tried Bombas socks yet? If not, you should. Bombas are athletic-leisure socks, engineered to look better, feel better, and perform better than other socks. I first found out about their socks when they reached out to me about doing a blog review last year, and have been loving them ever since. Most of my family also now owns multiple pairs of Bombas socks – I bought a ton of their athletic ankle socks and regular calf socks as stocking stuffers this past Christmas!

When I first tried Bombas socks (which I now always want to call “bomb ass socks” like my friend Theodora) last year, they only had two main options: ankle and calf height socks, both made from their moisture wicking Extra Long Staple Cotton. Matt and I have been loving rocking their ankle socks for workouts over the past year – their blister tab, which is a tiny ankle cushion that sits directly where your shoe hits your leg to prevent rubbing, chafing, and falling down, is perfection.

Yoga Is Not Your Therapy—Here’s Why

Source: http://www.sonima.com/yoga/yoga-as-therapy/

Since the practice of yoga has become mainstream, a growing number of people rely on its healing benefits to cope with life’s challenges. Under supportive circumstances, yoga can undoubtedly lift our spirits, release overwhelming emotion, and teach, through heightened awareness, how to cultivate a less judgmental and more peaceful relationship with ourselves.

At one point or another, you might have heard a friend or fellow practitioner exclaim, “Yoga is my therapy!” Maybe you’ve even said the words yourself. In a recent article on Refinery29, one woman shared her frustration with the practice when it failed to fulfill her high expectations: “I’d been thinking yoga had to be everything: a workout, a therapy session, a place to meet friends, a part-time job.” At her lowest point she felt a “rage bubble” surface inside of her during class, she wrote: “The frustration was as sticky as the mat under my feet, and it was preventing my mind from quieting down.”

It begs the question: Should yoga really be equated to therapy? And, at a higher level, does having such lofty hopes about the practice’s transformative powers diminish our ability to actually experience change?

A devoted long-term yoga practitioner would likely agree that yoga in its essence is innately therapeutic, and scientific literature has backed this up. We know that meditation on a most basic level decreases stres…

See Why You Should Never Take Health Advice From Instagram Celebs

Source: http://greatist.com/live/why-you-should-never-take-health-advice-from-instagram-celebs?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

We have to laugh at this video by Buzzfeed—otherwise we’d cry. It hilariously cuts to the heart of a problem that’s older than the Internet: There are a lot of snake oil salesmen and women out there, especially in the health industry. Now thanks to social media, they can peddle their crap to a larger audience than ever before. You’ll be chuckling through the absurd one-liners and the LOL-worthy runs to the bathroom, but don’t forget the important message: Seek out experts for your health advice, not just whoever has the most followers on Instagram.

This Woman Was Body Shamed for Wearing a Perfectly Normal Tank Top to the Gym

No one should be shamed for what they wear while exercising. It’s hard enough to muster the motivation to yank on workout clothes and actually head to the gym.

But that’s exactly what happened to Jenna Vecchio. (Unfortunately, she wasn’t the first person to be publicly shamed in a gym this week.) A supervisor at Movati Athletic in Ottawa, Canada, said her tank top made fellow gym goers and staff uncomfortable because it was too revealing. The crazy thing? Her black tank top looked like every other racerback tank you’ve seen. Check it out for yourself:

Vecchio was rightfully outraged and posted this message on Facebook:

I am a member of Movati Athletic Club in Orleans, ON. Today I was instructed by a supervisor at the club that my tank top was inappropriate dress and is offensive to both the staff and other members. That at Movati they have a dress code stating only appropriate gym attire and modest clothing is to be worn. I will start by saying my tank top was no different than many other women’s tank tops at the club, except my chest size is much larger in appearance in comparison to my frame than many of the other women. After asking every woman …

This Is the Type of Person You Should Be Dating (It's Science!)

Source: http://greatist.com/live/relationship-advice-the-type-of-person-you-should-be-dating?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Whether or not we like to admit it, most of us have a type. As this video from Bustle explains, our types are determined by lot more than physical characteristics. One theory is that our brain chemistry affects whom we’re attracted to. Researchers organized our types into four categories based on what kind of chemical we express the most:

Dopamine: Explorers (risky and impulsive) Serotonin: Builders (calm and community oriented) Testosterone: Directors (analytical and tough minded) Estrogen: Negotiators (positive and empathetic)

If you’re an explorer, chances are you’re attracted to other explorers. Same goes for builders. Directors tend to be attracted to negotiators since they balance each other out. But it’s not exactly that simple. There are also other factors (hello, emotional needs!) at play.

Tired of your type? It’s not all bad news. Think of your love life like a fairy tale—how did it begin, who were the characters, why didn’t it end happily ever after?—so you can try to figure out the pattern that didn’t work and avoid it next time.

How to Foam Roll Like a Pro

Source: http://greatist.com/fitness/how-foam-roll-pro?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Sore, stiff, tight? We feel you. Take some time for self-massage. Used pre-workout, pre-stretching, or simply to start the day, foam rolling has serious benefits, including easing muscle soreness, correcting muscle imbalance, increasing range of motion, and preventing injury.

Some gyms have foam rollers, but it might be worth investing in your own. (They’re still way cheaper than a professional massage!) Rollers vary in size, firmness, and shape. Long rollers provide more area for stability and support, while shorter options are more versatile and convenient for travel. A soft foam provides a gentler massage than a high-density version. Some options include a grid-like design or a ridged surface, which helps target tough-to-relieve knots and trigger points.

When you get rolling, spend about 60 seconds on each tight area. Use as much or as little pressure as feels comfortable for you. If you find a knot or sensitive spot, linger on it for a little while, rolling back and forth until the tenderness eases. Ten to 15 minutes per day is all it takes the reap the benefits. Trust us, your body will thank you.

Bill Marler on what is and is not working in the food safety system

The latest Salmonella outbreak comes courtesy of Pacific Coast Fruit Company, which produces Taylor Farms Organic Power Greens Kale Medley.

OrganicKaleMedley-1web

Alas, Salmonella do not care whether or not vegetables are USDA Certified Organic—even kale.

Coral Beach discusses the details of the investigation into this outbreak at Food Safety News this morning.

And food safety lawyer Bill Marler has some pointed questions about this outbreak.

Why no announcement of the Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak?
Why no recall of the product?
Given that the product was distributed nationwide, are we seeing a spike in Salmonella Enteritis cases in states other than Minnesota?
Why was the announcement removed from Pacific Coast Fruit Website?

He also has plenty to say about what another recent outbreak (this one due to frozen vegetables contaminated with Listeria) tells us about what is and what is not working in our current food safety system.

His essay makes the point that foodborne illness outbreaks due to contaminated meat are becoming increasingly rare.  Most current outbreaks are due to contaminated vegetables.

How come?  For meat, the system is working.

Regulation: prevention controls on meat and poultry went into effect in the mid-1990s.
The …
