An Open Letter To My Bullies: Thank You For Making Me Strong

Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/tinybuddha/~3/648IGlEEyZg/

“The heart is like a garden: it can grow compassion or fear, resentment or love. What seeds will you plant there?” ~Jack Kornfield

Dear Bullies,

To be honest, I didn’t think I would ever write you a letter. As far as I was concerned, the amount of suffering I went through during my school years was enough to make me bitter.

I didn’t forgive you, and I most certainly wasn’t about to forget.

I remember those years like it was yesterday—the cruel name calling; the scrutinizing of how I looked, what I said, and what I did; the public humiliation and cornering on the bus rides home.

Wrong face. Wrong size. Wrong skin color. Wrong personality.

No matter how hard I tried to understand it all, it felt like the world was telling me that I didn’t belong, and I never would.

I remember the hours spent locked in my room crying after school, while my mother paced around the house anxiously. Back then I didn’t know how to communicate to her how I was feeling, and she felt at a loss how to help. I felt paralyzed and confused.

In the schoolyard I was the good girl who never spoke badly of anyone, the quiet student who worked hard and who hated getting into trouble.

I remember the laughter, my cheeks burning as I walked fr…

OMG. I’m totally obsessed with this Peanut Butter Jelly Chia Seed Pudding. I found myself actually saying “mmmm” over and over as I was eating it, it’s that good! Basically it’s like eating a peanut butter jelly sandwich that tastes like dessert, in chia seed pudding form. I will be eating this for breakfast for…

Two Kind Words That Can Change or Save a Life

Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/tinybuddha/~3/ge0xhH4m68Q/

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” ~Leo Buscaglia

My fiancé and I escaped to the northern wilderness. We wanted to build our home and our life off grid, off the beaten path, far from civilization.

It didn’t matter that I was a city girl who couldn’t handle a chainsaw, fix a pickup, or read the warnings of wind and sky. My fiancé was a mountain man, skilled in survival. That was all we needed for a life in the middle of nowhere. Alone, but together, and we loved it.

We were independent and resourceful. Nothing fazed us. My fiancé had a solution for everything: broken generators, shortage of water, staying safe on hikes through the hills that we shared with wolves, coyotes, and bears.

Never once did we doubt our ability to survive.

And never once did we think that our biggest challenge would come from anything other than the wilderness itself.

Our days were consumed by nature. We were always one step ahead. One step ahead of hungry bears, deadly windstorms, drought, wildfire, and maintaining the only road that connected us to far-flung humanity. We were always one step ahead.

Until we weren&#8…

YOGA POGA SHMOGA! is an endearing story about the resiliency of a sibling relationship, tested when Mitzi chooses to practice yoga with her friends instead of hanging out with her younger brother, Axel. Feeling left out, Axel scorns his sister’s new activity with his dismissive catch phrase, “Yoga Poga Shmoga!” When his sister offers him his own yoga mat, Axel gives in, imagining his yoga mat as a magic carpet and on it, learns some yoga poses. He is soon reveling in the calming, joyous nature of yoga and inspires their whole neighborhood to practice in unison.

Written by wellness advocate and founder of Sonima.com, Sonia Jones, and illustrated by acclaimed artist Todd Dakins, YOGA POGA SHMOGA! dives headfirst into the power and fun of yoga, showing how it takes one person to open a world of mindfulness to the larger community. Yoga for children has gained popularity in recent years. 3.1% of American children now practice yoga, which has been shown to reduce stress, help focus and build self-esteem in children.

Avocados Finally Get the Slow Jam They Deserve

Avocados are nature’s Klondike bar—we’d do just about anything to get our hands on one. While our love for avocados is nearly limitless, it’s nothing compared to musician Keanu Trees’s affection. He really earns the title avocad-bro with this slow-jam ode to our favorite fruit (yes, it’s a fruit).

New report on GMOs: safe but “more research needed” (sigh)

Source: http://www.foodpolitics.com/2016/05/new-report-on-gmos-safe-but-more-research-needed-sigh/

The National Academies of Science has just released its long-awaited report “Genetically Engineered Crops: Experiences and Prospects.”

I was a reviewer on this report months ago and as far as I can tell it hasn’t changed much from when I sent in my comments.  Here’s what I said:

In light of public polarization of opinion of GE foods, this report tries to do something quite difficult—to come to evidence-based opinions about the risks and benefits of these foods now and in the future.  The report makes it clear that the committee listened carefully to a wide variety of opinions about risks and benefits and tried to make sense of the varying viewpoints based on available evidence.  This was not easy, given the inadequacy of much of the evidence.

I give the report high marks for its neutral tone and cautious interpretations.  The report clearly reveals how little is known about the effects of GE foods, how much GE is about crops fed to animals and how little is about food for people (except indirectly), and how minimally the promises of food biotechnology have been realized, except as they benefit large agricultural producers.

In trying to be fair, the committee will please nobody.  Proponents will be distressed that the benefits are not more strongly celebrated.  Critics will be upset that the report treats many of their concerns pejoratively (“activism”).  Both sides will find plenty in the report to buttress their views.  Th…

Speaking of oatmeal, I’ve discovered a new yummy breakfast – it’s basically a cross between my two favorites: Microwave Banana Oatmeal and my Flour Free Breakfast Pancake!

healthy easy breakfast gluten free

To make it, just put the ingredients for my Flour Free Breakfast Pancake in a bowl, whisk together, and then pop it in the microwave for 2 to 3 minutes (instead of cooking it on the stove). Then, top it with goodies! This week I’ve been loving my usual Microwave Banana Oatmeal toppings on it – cottage cheese and yogurt, along with nuts/seeds and berries. So good! Super filling, too. You can also leave out the dairy if you want – whatever works!

New Labels Warn That A Tender Steak Could Be A Little Dangerous

A typical label includes safe cooking instructions. This label on blade-tenderized beef sold at Costco recommends 160 degrees as the minimum internal temperature, which doesn't require a three-minute rest time.

A new label on some of the steaks in your grocery store highlights a production process you may never have heard of: mechanical tenderizing.

This means the beef has been punctured with blades or needles to break down the muscle fibers and make it easier to chew. But it also means the meat has a greater chance of being contaminated and making you sick.

The labels are a requirement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that went into effect this week.

“Blade tenderized,” that label might read, followed by safe cooking instruc…

What Is Hypnotherapy and How Does It Work?

When it comes to hypnosis, most people picture a therapist swinging a pocket watch in front of a patient’s eyes in an attempt to reach their subconscious and exert mind control. This image—most likely planted by childhood cartoons—is kooky, but not totally inaccurate. Hypnotherapy is the practice of helping a patient reach a deep relaxation and an altered state of consciousness, aka trance, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. In this relaxed state, patients may see a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate as well as changes in brain wave activity. Research shows that hypnosis may improve immune function, decrease stress, and ease pain and feelings of anxiety. This is why hypnotherapy is offered at Mount Sinai’s Dubin Breast Center in New York City. In this video interview with Sonima.com founder, Sonia Jones, Guy Montgomery, the Dubin Breast Center’s director of Psychological Services, shares a guided session of this calming exercise (sans pocket watch).
