Think You Can Fail Only If You Try? Think Again.

Source: http://www.niashanks.com/redefining-failure/

redefining failureWe may hesitate to do something or try new things because we don’t want to fail, but what if not taking action could lead to an even bigger failure?

If we tried something and didn’t attain the desired outcome, we define the event as a failure. We tried. It didn’t work, or was a catastrophic disaster; therefore, we failed.

Failure, it seems, is a result of taking action.

“Just do it!” they say. Well, maybe you just did it and hated it, or perhaps the outcome was worse than you expected or could have prepared for.

This is why we can easily smooth talk ourselves out of taking action. Trying to avoid failure is a comforting excuse to not take that risk or try that new thing and remain safely in our comfort zone.

Taking action is scary because it’s an opportunity for us to fail; it makes us vulnerable. We say, “If I do this thing, I could fail miserably” or “The result may not be what I intended.” The action may indeed lead to failure; so we procrastinate, make excuses, or put the thought out of our minds. We nestle snuggly back into the welcoming warmth of our comfort zone. Safe and sound from the big bully, failure.

But it’s time to redefine failure. Over the past several months I’ve been examining this word — fail…

Hey friends! We had a bunch of sweet potato/yellow pepper hash leftover from Mother’s day brunch at our place, so I threw together an easy Mexican themed sweet potato and black bean power bowl for lunch yesterday.

Nut So Fast, Kind Bars: FDA Smacks Snacks On Health Claims

The maker of Kind bars — which contain almonds and other nuts — pushed back against an FDA complaint about its use of the phrase “healthy and tasty.” The FDA is now reviewing its definition of “healthy” as used on food labels.

The Food and Drug Administration is re-evaluating its definition of what counts as a “healthy” food.

The change comes as healthful fats — including fats found in nuts — are increasingly recognized as part of a good diet.

Currently, if a food company wants to put a “healthy” claim on its label, regulations stipulate t…

Bluefin Blues: Valuing A Tuna Species Before It's Too Late

The chef picks up the nubby stick of fresh wasabi. Through a translator, he explains the good ones are straight and deep green in color. It was the first time I had seen it fresh. The green dab you get at most American sushi restaurants is almost always horseradish and food coloring squeezed from a tube. While that may have been my introduction to freshly harvested wasabi, it wasn’t my first time seeing something far more precious — Pacific bluefin tuna.

We skipped the early-morning tuna auction on our recent breakfast tour of Tokyo’s famous Tsukiji Market, which we purchased as part of our vacation in Japan. I figured the frozen carcasses would leave me feeling gloomy. The bursting seafood mecca has plenty of other things to see and is just as chaotic as you’d expect. For just over 80 years, it’s been drawing global tourists to central Tokyo to gawk …

6 Steps To Free Yourself From the Struggle of Yo-Yo Dieting

“Your body is a temple, but only if you treat it as one.” ~Astrid Alauda

Have you ever guiltily reached for second helpings of a tempting dish or dessert while justifying it with something along the lines of, “It’s okay, I’m going on a diet/detox after this”?

Or, do you ever find yourself eating really healthy one week, then the minute you cave in and eat something unhealthy, your eating habits suddenly take a turn for the worst?

Are you really hard on yourself when you don’t feel comfortable in clothes you want to wear and suddenly regret all the unhealthy food choices you’ve made the past few months?

I’ve experienced all of these scenarios. I used to yo-yo diet for years, and I would cycle through super healthy or restrictive eating plans one week, to eat-whatever-you-like the next week.

I was always fighting to be a particular weight or to look a certain way. My eating habits were inconsistent, and so were my weight, my energy levels, and the way I felt about my body.

After years of unhealthy eating habits (that may have appeared healthy on the outside), my body didn’t take it so well anymore. I got to a stage where I would feel sick after most meals and suffered stomach cramps d…

Does ‘The Biggest Loser’ Study Prove That Long-term Weight Loss is Impossible?

Source: http://summertomato.com/does-the-biggest-loser-study-prove-that-long-term-weight-loss-is-impossible

wow scale

Instead of our regularly scheduled Friday link love, today I’m going to discuss just one story that made a huge splash in the weight loss community.

On Monday the New York Times published an article titled “After ‘The Biggest Loser,’ Their Bodies Fought to Regain Weight” and about a million of you sent it to me asking for my opinion.

The new study (you can read the real thing here) is very interesting and also a little frustrating. In case you live on Mars, ‘The Biggest Loser’ is a reality TV show that takes a group of people with Class III obesity and subjects them to extreme exercise and caloric restriction, with the result of rapid and dramatic weight loss often close to 50% of body weight.

I’ve never been a fan. Not only does the show double down on the torturous methods of weight loss perpetuated by the dieting industry, but (as expected) virtually everyone who participates in the show gains the majority of the weight back.

I doubt many of us can fathom how devastating this must be to the contestants psychologically––to go through months of hell and achieve what seems like an impossible level of “success,” then have those hard earned victories evaporate over the following years, all under the public…

The Superhero Civil War Workout: Choose Iron Man or Captain America

Source: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2016/05/09/the-superhero-civil-war-workout-choose-iron-man-or-captain-america/

Today’s article is from Nerd Fitness’s newest team member, and Master of the Fitness Universe, Jim Bathurst. Take it away Jim!

Have you seen Captain America: Civil War yet?

Last week, we talked about why Captain America or Iron Man might be right in the epic battle within the Marvel universe.

Today the choice is yours: The Iron Man Workout or the Captain America Workout.

Iron Man wants to work within the new superhero registration law. He believes that the heroes of the world need to operate within the rules and regulations for the safety and well being of everyone. That’s why the Iron Man workout includes more classic, structured movements. And because this is Iron Man, we’ll primarily be using iron (weights) — these things write themselves!

Captain America is opposed to these superhero regulations and wants to be able to move and operate freely. You’ll notice his workout includes more bodyweight movements and non-traditional movements in multiple directions.

Warm up

Each workout will start with the same warm up.

X-Men Jumping Jacks: The X-Men have declared neutrality in the Civil War, so whichever workout/side you choose you can start off with jumping jacks (passing through an “X” position, of course)
Spidermans:  While Spiderman appears to be on the side of Iron Man, I am willing to bet he still sides a lot with Captain America and the desire for super…

Why Many Midwestern Farmers Are Pro-TPP

Turn on the TV and you can barely escape the acronym TPP.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a free trade deal between the U.S. and 11 other countries that’s currently being negotiated. Presidential candidates on both sides of the aisle are deriding the TPP, saying it’s a bum deal that will hurt the U.S. economy and especially low-wage workers.

But if you venture into the Midwest and ask a farmer about the TPP, you’re likely to get a different answer.

“This pending TPP trade negotiatio…
