Finding Freedom in Illness: A Guide to Suffering Less When Sick (Interview & Giveaway)

Sick

If you’ve ever been sick for a prolonged period of time, you understand how physically, mentally, and emotionally draining it can be.

Maybe you don’t what’s causing your illness, or how to treat it, and you’re tired of searching for answers.

Maybe you blame yourself for repressing emotions, not exercising, or otherwise potentially causing your condition; or maybe you don’t hold yourself responsible, but fear that others do.

Maybe you can no longer do the things you love; or maybe you can do them, but it’s much harder, and therefore, far less satisfying.

While I’ve never struggled with a long-term physical illness, I’ve watched loved ones grapple with serious challenges; I’ve sympathized with their feelings, fears, and frustrations; and I’ve wished I could do something to help.

Going forward, I will point them to Tiny Buddha contributor Peter Fernando’s new book, Finding Freedom in Illness: A Guide to Cultivating Deep Well-Being through Mindfulness and Self-Compassion.

Having struggled with various chronic illnesses through the years, Peter knows what it’s like to live a life that’s full of challenges and losses. He’s …

How much is the soda industry spending to defeat public health?

Source: http://www.foodpolitics.com/2016/05/how-much-is-the-soda-industry-spending-to-defeat-public-health/

Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Mike Newall says the beverage industry is spending a lot of money (“flowing like a Big Gulp”) to defeat the City Council’s soda tax initiative—$2.6 million so far.

Here’s the catch – this time around, the beverage barons only have to win over City Council. There are 17 Council members, so that comes out to about $152,000 in ad dollars each.

Philadelphia is a battleground Big Soda cannot afford to lose.

The soda industry spent more than $10 million to fight soda tax measures in San Francisco (the industry succeeded) and in Berkeley (the industry lost—76% of voters were for the tax).

But what I really want to know is how much the soda industry spent to defeat Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal to cap the sizes of sugary beverages at 16 ounces.  I live in New York City and here’s what I saw the industry do or heard about (much of this is documented in my book, Soda Politics, and in former NYC Health Commissioner Tom Farley’s Saving Gotham; Farley is now health commissioner in Philadelphia):

Three full-page ads in the New York Times
Signs on Coke and Pepsi delivery trucks
A personal mailing to my home
Tee shirts: “I picked out my beverage all by myself”
People collecting signatures on petitions against the proposal (they said they were paid $30/hour)
Airplane banners
Movie trailers
Video ads
Meetings with city officials
Legal challenges—briefs…

As you guys know, I was a last minute addition to this year’s team to replace Brianne who unfortunately broke her foot. I’ve been honored to be part of the Cabot Fit Team twice before (in 2013 and 2015, both times for the Beach to Beacon 10k in Maine), so it didn’t take me long to agree to join the group again for the Vermont variation!

Civil War Week: Stick To Your Guns Like Captain America

Source: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2016/05/02/civil-war-week-stick-to-your-guns-like-captain-america/

“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” – Mark Twain

This is a monumental week for Nerds and Rebels worldwide, as Captain America: Civil War hits theaters this Friday. Reviews are glowing, but this movie puts us nerds in a seriously awkward position. Why?

Well, in this story, Captain America and his friend Tony Stark find themselves on opposite sides of a brutal argument. And a civil war of epic proportions ensues.

Instead of taking sides, we’re going to highlight why both characters are partly right, and partly wrong. Up first, Team Captain America.

Have a Creed You Stick To

I like to consider myself an old school guy like Steve Rogers, which is probably why I have his art above my desk and his shield on my wall. And why the back of my book says I’m trying to become Captain America.

Look people in the eye. Have a firm handshake. Remember people’s names. Inspire through action. Stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves and stand alongside your brothers in arms.

And stick to your guns, even when you are not on the side of the majority.

When Captain America is on the “wrong side” of the majority (as we saw in Ca…

Why Proper Alignment Is Crucial for Pain Relief

Severe or chronic pain affects nearly 50 million American adults, reports a new study prepared by National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, which was published in The Journal of Pain last summer. About half of these people are suffering from chronic pain every single day. Steven, the subject of Sonima.com’s new video series called “Becoming Pain Free,” is one of them.

The 34-year-old independent filmmaker and photographer, who just moved to Los Angeles with his wife, Melanie, and 5-year-old son, Victor, has been battling consistent joint pain in his legs, wrists, and lower back—a byproduct of his profession that requires holding heavy camera equipment for hours—for about nine years. It’s common for Steven to wake up with numb arms and feet and unable to walk. When doctors couldn’t help him address the pain, he turned to Pete Egoscue, Sonima.com’s pain and anatomy advisor, author of multiple books including Pain Free, and creator of the Egoscue Method, an exercise therapy program—taught at more than 25 clinics worldwide—designed to treat chronic pain without prescription painkillers or invasive surgery.

In episode five of this video series, Steven reports feeling stronger and healthier while carrying camera equipment on a shoot. When he goes in for his weekly vi…

The Ugly Side of Health and Fitness

Source: http://www.niashanks.com/ugly-side-health-fitness/

the ugly side of health and fitnessThere’s an Ugly Side to health and fitness most don’t realize exists — until they experience it for themselves. That’s what happened to me, and I don’t want it to happen to you.

Lose fat and like how you look in (and out of) clothes. Improve your health markers (e.g., blood profile, BMI, fasting glucose). Increase your energy levels.

In short, health and fitness is about helping us look better, feel better, be better.

We all want these things, right? And they’re sold as promises of what we’ll achieve when we follow a diet and workout program as we commit to improving our health and fitness (or simply build the body we want). But there’s an Ugly Side to health and fitness. It’s not something most are aware exists when they embark on a new regimen, but many encounter it on their journey. Some baggage, if you will, that can tag along with the desired goals listed above.

Admittedly not everyone will get a close up view of the Ugly Side of health and fitness, but I’ve stared it in the face, and I know myriad women have too. This is the side no one warns you about, but you may unfortunately discover for yourself. Much of the popular information cloaked as “health and fitness” dominating the i…
