The food glitterati will gather in Chicago Monday night for the black-tie James Beard Chef and Restaurant Awards, known as the “Oscars of the food world.” Most of the categories sound like industry fare: Outstanding Restaurant Design. Best Chef: Great Lakes. Best New Restaurant. Rising Star Chef of the Year. There’s not much of interest for anyone outside the foodies and food world orbit. Except, that is, for a sneakily subversive category: America’s Classics.

Each year, the JBF restaurant committee selects a handful of eateries from around the country for a range of criteria that have little to do with haute cuisine. When the category began in 1998, the eateries honored were usually humble and predictably American fare: Stroud’s, a fried chicken eatery in Kansas City; the Second Avenue Deli in New York City; Durgin Park, a seafood-and-sandwich eatery in Boston’s Faneuil Hall; and Joe T. Garcia’s, a Tex-Mex place in Fort Worth, were among the first year’s honorees.

Middlebury Maple Run Half Marathon Race Recap

Yesterday, I ran my 18th (whoa) half marathon: the Middlebury Maple Run in Vermont!

middlebury maple run

It’s totally insane to me that I’ve done so many half marathons – I still remember running 6 miles for the first time ever back in 2009 when I was training for my first Army Ten Miler. It’s amazing what your body (and mind) can get used to – and how much I’ve come to love the longer races. No matter how long the race, crossing that finish line always feels amazing, but I especially love the special form of endorphin wasted that the half marathon and above distances produce. :)

As you guys know, I was in Vermont for the race thanks to my friends at Cabot! I’ve been a member of their Cabot Fit Team twice before (both times for the Beach to Beacon 10k in Maine), so it was an honor to be part of the team again! Cabot is one of my favorite brands – not only do I love their cheese, but the passion their team (both the marketing staff and the farmers) shows for their work is …

I am so excited to be joining The Refinery Staff and to be given the opportunity to share my nutrition education with all the amazing people I have been sweating with during the last few years!   A little bit of information about me-  I am a Licensed Clincial Social Worker and a Certified Holistic Nutritionist.  I have a private practice in Northeast Portland where I work with people around nutrition and/or mental health issues.  With my dual educational background, I believe it can be important to help clients examine both the physical and emotional factors that may be helpful for them to reach their goals.   If you see me at the gym, please don’t hesitate to ask me questions or I am also available for private nutritional consultation if you would like a more individualized plan to reach your health and fitness goals.

Clients often ask me what I feel are the most important areas to focus on for good health.  Of course, there are many areas you could emphasize but  focusing on the five below, will set you firmly on the path to overall vibrant health.

Focus on Healthy Fats:  Research has repeatedly demonstrated that fat is necessary to our health, particularly omega 3 fatty acids.  Omega -3’s are an essential fatty acid, meaning ou…

43 Mouthwatering Spaghetti Squash Recipes

Source: http://greatist.com/eat/spaghetti-squash-recipes?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Finding a delicious, low-carb pasta substitute is similar to hoping sugar-free ice cream tastes like gelato: wishful and often disappointing. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t healthy ways to enjoy comfort food without sacrificing taste.

Cue spaghetti squash. We won’t pretend it tastes like traditional pasta (it’s a squash, after all), but it is equally as satisfying and can be substituted into almost any pasta recipe. Bonus: You can eat the noodle-like contents straight from the squash itself!

So before denouncing carbs (they’re good for you!) and saying sayonara to spaghetti, give these fiber-filled noodles a try. Though the main ingredient may feel foreign, the following recipes will make you feel right at home.

These days every brunch menu seems to feature avocado and eggs on toast; stand out from the crowd by baking the healthy fats into spaghetti squash instead. It’s a lower-carb alternative, and with the heap of …

Colors of happiness

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.” ~Helen Keller

Years ago, a friend had a small party for her son’s fifth birthday. I was expecting to spend most of the party talking to the other adults. But that’s not what happened. Instead, at the insistence of my friend’s son, I spent most of the party entertaining him and the other children.

Occasionally, I would escape to the living room to talk to the other adults. But before long my friend’s son would emerge from his bedroom and drag me back to play with him and the other kids.

The truth is that I didn’t mind. In fact, I actually enjoyed the attention. And what happened at the birthday party has been the story of my life. Kids have always been drawn to me, and vice versa.

Children draw out parts of my personality that adults rarely see: my silly side, my creative side, my playful side. I’m an expert at improvising engaging games and activities for children. And of course, I always join in the fun!

And yet, despite the natural affinity that I have for children, for most of my adult life I’ve been indifferent to having my own kids. I’ve seen firsthand from family members a…

The Best Pilates Moves You Can Do Without a Reformer

Source: http://greatist.com/move/pilates-best-exercises-to-do-without-reformer?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

If you’ve ever seen a Pilates reformer, then you know why they can be intimidating. With straps, springs, and lots of moving parts, those things look like medieval torture devices. And while the machines definitely benefit your Pilates practice by offering resistance and support, it’s way easier (and just as effective) to do certain moves on a mat.

“One of the most amazing things about Pilates is that it is so effective with just your body weight or small props, so you can do it at home, in a hotel room, at the park, in the car, waiting in line—I literally do it everywhere,” says Erika Bloom, certified Pilates teacher and founder of Erika Bloom Pilates Plus.

Here, Bloom demos the best 18 moves you can do without a reformer. These exercises aren’t just pulled from the classic mat repertoire; they’re adapted for the mat from reformer choreography, so they go above and beyond a typical mat Pilates class or video.

Keep in mind that Pilates is supposed to be done very slowly and deliberately, so don’t rush through these moves. It’s all about control, not muscle exhaustion or speed of reps, so take your time and connect to your breath. “One of the most important Pilates principles is the idea that the breath is coordinated with core engagement,” Bloom says. “Breathe into the diaphragm, then on the exhale, wrap the lower abs around the body like there’s a magnet between the spine and belly button.” Think of it like cinching up …
