Soda Politics gets Presidential: Sanders v. Clinton on soda taxes

Source: http://www.foodpolitics.com/2016/04/soda-politics-gets-presidential-sanders-v-clinton-on-soda-taxes/

Talk about soda politics! I can hardly believe it but soda taxes have become an issue in the Democratic primary campaign.

This started when Hillary Clinton came out in favor of Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney’s proposed soda tax.

I’m very supportive of the mayor’s proposal to tax soda to get universal pre-school for kids. I mean, we need universal pre-school. And if that’s a way to do it, that’s how we should do it.

Given the Clinton Foundation’s long-standing relationship with Coca-Cola, this was unexpected.

In short order, Bernie Sanders distanced himself from her position:

I do not support Mayor Kenney’s plan to pay for this program with a regressive grocery tax that would disproportionately affect low-income and middle-class Americans. I was especially surprised to hear Hillary Clinton say that she is “very supportive” of this proposal. Secretary Clinton has vowed not to raises taxes on anyone making less than $250,000 per year. For reasons that are not clear, she has chosen to abandon her pledge by embracing a tax that targets the poor and the middle class while going easy on the wealthy. That approach is wrong for Philadelphia, and wrong for the country.

This, in turn, induced Paul Krugman, who seems to have little love for Sanders anyway, to weigh in:

It does seem worth pointing out that progressivity of taxes is not the most important thing, even when your concern is inequality. Notably, Nordic count…

The fuss over previously unpublished data from the Minnesota Heart Study

Source: http://www.foodpolitics.com/2016/04/the-fuss-over-previously-unpublished-data-from-the-minnesota-heart-study/

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned several new studies that elicited much media attention.  I am now getting around to them.

Let’s start with the article in the BMJ about newly discovered data from the Minnesota Heart Study purportedly casting doubt on the risks of saturated fat (here’s what the Washington Post said about it).

The BMJ article concluded:

Findings from the Minnesota Coronary Experiment add to growing evidence that incomplete publication has contributed to overestimation of the benefits of replacing saturated fat with vegetable oils rich in linoleic acid.

I’ve been at this game long enough to guess that any statement suggesting that everything you thought you knew about nutrition is wrong ought to raise red flags and call for more than the usual degree of skepticism.

Here are some sensible and, yes, skeptical comments about this study:

From Julia Belluz of Vox

But there were a few major problems with the research. The study involved men and women of an average age of 52 who had been admitted to a nursing home and six state mental health hospitals because they were sick. The researchers who conducted the meta-analysis note the “results are not necessarily generalizable to populations without mental illnesses or living outside nursing homes.”

Another issue: The study followed 9,423 women and men, but only a quarter of the participants followed the diets for more than a year. Al…

I'm Always Tired! Am I Pushing Myself Too Hard or Is Something Actually Wrong With Me?

Source: http://greatist.com/live/adrenal-fatigue-why-am-i-always-tired?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Q: I’m a 25-year-old woman trying to balance kicking off my career, spending time with my boyfriend and friends, and staying healthy by making it to the gym. I get enough sleep, but I’m still constantly exhausted. How do I know if I’m always tired because I’m pushing myself too hard or if something is actually wrong with me?

A: Great question, and one I imagine just about every woman—regardless of age—has faced at one point or another.

I can certainly relate. Trying to juggle my roles as mom, wife, and entrepreneur is no easy feat and that nonstop schedule can definitely impact my energy levels. But even though I sometimes feel spent at the end of a busy day, the tired feeling I get nowadays is nothing compared to the crushing fatigue I experienced when I was living through serious hormonal turmoil.

Even though your daily to-dos might be different than mine, you’re balancing a lot and trying your best to do it all perfectly. But whether you realize it or not, the stress of a hectic schedule can and does impact your hormonal health, and that might explain your overwhelming exhaustion.

Extreme fatigue is no joke; it can cloud your judgment, put you on an emotional roller coaster, and have real physical repercussions. All of this can impact your endocrine system in a major way, and chugging venti soy mochas in an effort to combat the crazy-making tiredness only make matters worse.

Occasional sleepiness is perfectly normal, but …

Gifts from a Terrible Disease: A Message for Anyone Who’s Slowly Losing a Loved One

“Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don’t fight them. Just find a new way to stand.” ~Oprah Winfrey

Alzheimer’s crept into our lives about five years ago. It’s like a vine growing alongside a house, slowly taking over the space that was once free. But in this case, the vine is slowly creeping over my mum’s brain.

There are so many horrific statistics attached to this disease: Worldwide, nearly forty-four million people currently have Alzheimer’s or a related dementia; one in nine Americans over sixty-five has Alzheimer’s disease; unless a cure is found, more than sixteen million Americans will have the disease by 2050.

The numbers are so scary I can hardly wrap my head around them. But to be perfectly honest with you, right here, right now, I don’t care about all these statistics. The one thing I do care about is the fact that this is happening to my mum.

The disease has brought her physical pain, fear, and confusion. In fact, it has brought all of us that.

Watching my mum disappear into this disease is heart wrenching. Watching my dad having to cope with losing the love of his life, the woman he has been married to for fifty years, makes me sad beyond belief.

It is a cruel disease. We are all devastate…

7 Essential Exercises for Pregnant Women

In the past 30 years the number of births by c-section has skyrocketed. One reason for this, posits Pete Egoscue, the founder of the Egoscue Method, the world leader of nonmedical pain relief, is the skeletal misalignment that results from our modern, sedentary lifestyle.

Through the course of pregnancy, Egoscue explains, the unborn child develops with the head up and it eventually must turn upside-down into position in the birth canal. This requires the pelvis to flare, tip itself forward, and open up to create enough space in the birth canal for natural childbirth. With optimal anatomical alignment this is an easy process, but when the pelvis is not in a neutral position—and for anyone who spends the majority of their day sitting, it probably is not—the body can’t find the muscles to rotate the pelvis into birthing position, leading to a need for c-section or problems with childbirth.

This exercise program is designed to help the body return itself to a neutral position early in pregnancy, so it can prepare for the process of having a baby. For best results, set aside 20 minutes every day to do this program. The targeted exercises will gently and effectively build strength in the subtle supporting musculature essential for good posture and natural childbirth.

Disappointed

When life doesn’t meet our expectations, it can devastate our sense of security, threaten our self-esteem, and leave us feeling lost, scared, and out of control. I know—I’ve been there quite a few times before.

Like the time I moved across the country to live with a man I’d met online just a month prior, only to recognize nine months later that we were two broken people who were toxic together.

Or the time I got involved with a multi-level marketing company, thinking I’d be a huge success, only to realize six months later I’d invested myself (and my savings) in a pyramid scheme.

Or when I left LA with my fiancé, thinking we’d be able to live on two coasts near both of our families, only to realize after three years in limbo that we couldn’t make it work.

When things don’t go to plan, we feel out of control, angry with ourselves, and possibly with others. We wonder what we could have done differently and if we’ll ever be happy, now that the thing we pinned all our hopes to hasn’t worked out.

Author Christine Hassler knows a thing or two about dealing with these kinds of life-shattering disappointments.

Skipping the Dressing Makes Your Salad Less Healthy (and Less Tasty)

When I was a teenager salad dressing was the enemy.

Sure I knew salads were the best choice for losing weight. But dressing, that evil temptress, tried her best to undo all the pain and suffering I just knew was necessary to get the body I wanted.

I remember once getting into an argument with my dad (the poor man had endured years of my refusing even a drop of fat on anything I ate).

He had made a substantial (and delicious) Cobb salad for dinner, and was offering me a bottle of low-fat ranch dressing to top it off.

I self-righteously retorted, “Salad dressing defeats the purpose of eating a salad.”

“No it doesn’t,” he explained with exasperation. “The purpose of eating a salad is to get your vegetables and leafy greens in for the day.”

Clearly we were speaking different languages.

I ignored his offering and forced down an enormous bowl of lettuce, egg whites, and non-fat ham. My dad took his salad and his dressing, and we went our separate ways.

In retrospect, neither of us were eating particularly healthfully or particularly unhealthfully. Sure we were eating salad, but we were also both observing the insane nutritional recommendations of the time to different degrees. Seriously, WTF is…

We’re currently making the drive from Pensacola Beach (where we spent the past few days) over to Destin/Seaside/Watersound area (where the wedding festivities are taking place), so I wanted to pop in quickly and share some photos from our adventures so far! Enjoy! :)
