Yesterday, April 1, 2016, we introduced the official minimalist T-shirt, a $729.00 piece of cotton, as our April Fools’ Day gag. Because the response was overwhelming, we learned several lessons as our audience split into three camps:

THE TRUSTERS. The first group—the trusting folks—allowed their trust of The Minimalists to steer them in a direction that didn’t align with the values of minimalism: more than 7,000 people clicked the “Buy Now” button, which, assuming everyone continued their checkout, would’ve resulted in over five million dollars in revenue. While that sounds nice, as The Minimalists we do our best to ensure our income aligns with our principles, so a payday drenched in consumerism—even a multi-million-dollar windfall—ain’t worth the compromise.

Yes, trust is extremely important, but blind trust is a recipe for dissatisfaction; therefore, we must work hard to trust but verify the world around us, especially when it comes to the 5,000 marketing messages we see every day. As business owners, we know the importance of setting goals and creating habits to get us there.

That without knowing our destination we cannot create the proper roadmap to guide us. Well, the same goes for our clients.

As coaches, we will do whatever we think is necessary to help clients build the habits they need to achieve their goals. If they want to lose 15 pounds, we start with small steps that they can work on so that they can go on their merry little way towards weight loss success. Simple, right?

Unfortunately, it just never works so easily.

In order to keep clients consistent, increase their adherence, and make things easier for both them and us (because let’s face it, that’s what we all want), they need constant reminders or guidance for even the simplest things. After all, they don’t know what we coaches know, and that’s why they come to us.

But these reminders aren’t just us pestering them via email or text, or putting sticky notes on the fridge, on the bathroom mirror, on the steering wheel, or in their pocket.

They need reminders that actually make an impact and don’t end up crumpled at the bottom of a trashcan.

So, what other option is there?

Fear Is Why We Have Too Much Stuff

While we might want to get out from under the mountain of possessions we have, and have all the best intentions of simplifying our lives … the truth is that we continue to have too much stuff.

Part of that is laziness, an attitude of “I’ll get to it later” … but the real driving force behind our too-much-stuffitis is fear.

Fear is what causes us to buy things we don’t really need. Fear keeps us holding onto stuff we don’t need.

Consider:

You pack too much when you travel, and have a garage full of stuff, just in case you might need it. This is a fear that you might need something and not have it. It’s fear of lack of safety and certainty.
You buy a lot of things for an upcoming event or trip because you don’t know what you might need. Your fear is that you’ll be unprepared. Again, it’s fear of lack of safety and certainty.
You hold on to things you don’t use anymore because you might need it someday. You probably won’t, but you’re really not sure. Again, it’s fear of lack of safety and certainty.
You keep books and other aspirational items (guitar you never learned, elliptical machine you don’t use) because you hope you’ll get to them someday, and letting go seems like a loss of hope. You fear not being the person you want to be. This is a fear of not being good enough as you are.

This year’s a big one for me and the wheels.

I’ve always loved cycling; my trusty Giant roadie gets me to work every day on a wave of endorphins and tears (must buy cycling glasses for next winter!), and during spring and summer weekends you’ll probably find me throwing myself down the Welsh mountains or climbing the rolling hills of the South Downs on the mountain bike.

Despite my love for the sport, I’ve never actually entered any official events. I go on lots of brilliant group rides, but have yet to pop my sportive cherry, until now.

Every Day Can’t be Awesome, And That’s OK

“Don’t waste a single day of your life!” I’m sure you can agree, but sometimes when I hear that I want to say, “Shut up. I’m just trying to do adult things right now.”

Act like you only have six months to live!

Don’t allow any day to end without doing something amazing!

“Nah, I’m not worried about the more-than-likely painful consequences. YOLO!!!!”

I admit that I consistently encourage you to live the highest quality life you can. To take risks, face fear, and make the most of every day. To the best of my ability, I practice what I preach too.

“Strive to become the strongest, most awesome version of yourself,” I always say.

And that’s great! We should do what we can to make the most of every day. We never know when we’ll be faced with an Oh Shit! moment and have opportunities taken away from us. It’s best to actively manage your life (i.e., make choices) rather than allowing others to dictate your life. Take control, make choices, and create a wonderful life.

That’s a worthy endeavor, and it allows us in many ways to “live life to the fullest.”

But let’s face it: some days flat out suck.
