Source: http://www.karpfitness.com/the-low-fat-way-to-eat-out/

Q: I want to enjoy restaurant dining with my friends. How can I eat out while still keeping up with my low-fat diet? Q:  If you prepare your food at home, you have control over the amount – and the kind –  of fat you add. But this isn’t always as easy when you eat at a restaurant. Whenever you eat out, … Read More

If this seems like deja vu, it’s not just you! I am republishing this blog post because there are only a few hours left to grab a “Be here now” shirt.

As you may remember, I shared a post a couple months back about my desire to start writing and producing inspiring short films, in partnership with my fiancé Ehren Prudhel.

It was just after the New Year, and I knew the time was finally right to revisit both of our childhood dreams.

Over the past couple of months we’ve been hard at work writing, connecting with crewmembers, and getting everything in order to film our first short in April (to be shared here soon after).

I couldn’t be more thrilled that we’ll soon be casting and filming! I hope you’ll love the film, which focuses on loneliness and connection in the digital age, and I hope you’ll help us bring our dream to life by grabbing a limited edition “Be Here Now” shirt.

Get Your Shirt Now!

You can choose from seven styles—including a fitted tee, racerback tank, and a hoodie—in five different colors, with sizes ranging from XS to 5XL (for some styles).

Because we’re all about giving back, a portion of the proceeds for this campaign will support Childhelp, a non-profit that offers programs to prevent and treat child abuse.

10 Skills Any True Coach Must Balance

Source: http://www.theptdc.com/2015/11/how-to-be-a-good-coach-dan-john/

The following article is by Dan John. His brand new book Before We Go: An Ongoing Philosophy of Lifting, Living and Learning is available for preorder now (copies ship Nov 18th).

Coaching is an art and a science. How to be a good coach balances the skill set of a used car salesman, a ship’s captain and a cable TV comedy show host.

Knowing what you’re doing is part of the battle. Implementing the right thing(s) to do is where the real art begins. And, not to forget, even the perfect plan has to be flexible enough to turn and change on the whims of life, the universe and everything else that may come up.

I have a few principles that keep me from losing most of my mind. Here’s the 10 skills any coach must balance:

1. Constant Assessment

Certainly, there are formal tools for assessment and they have great value. We can measure practically everything about you with standing long jumps, the FMS, heart rate tests and all of the rest. True coaching is constant assessment.

It’s hard to grasp. When something simply doesn’t look right, you need to address it quickly and correctly even if you don’t have the exact problem sorted out yet. That’s why as a good coach you never stop learning.

2. Constant Upgrading

Whether it’s books for personal trainers, articles, workshops or sitting in a bar, good coaches are always looking for a better way…a clearer path. Discernment is a rare skill, but the ability to pick and choose “…

Rugged Maniac 5k Review

If you’ve been reading Live Life Active for a while now, you’ve seen me do TONS of mud runs (Warrior Dash, Rebel Race, Patriot Challenge and more) because I absolutely love them, but now I’ve added one more to my belt.  The Rugged Maniac!

There’s something about getting totally dirty and jumping through mud that a part of me just loves.  I guess it brings back memories of playing soccer in the rain and just having fun with it.  Well I saw that the Rugged Maniac was coming to Charleston, SC and when I saw a Groupon come out for it, I jumped on the deal right away.  I think I paid $69 with the Groupon (The lowest you can get it for is $45 a year in advance and it ends up costing around $100 if you sign up on race day).

Before running, the only thing I had heard about the Rugged Maniac was that Mark Cuban was a partner of it and if you know me, you know I LOVE Mark Cuban and some Shark Tank action :)  I knew if Mark Cuban had any say in the design of this course, that it was going to be tough..and boy, was I RIGHT!

The Charleston race took place on March 12th …

Aubrey Fletcher knew she wanted to work on a dairy farm ever since she was a little girl.

“I do remember my mom asking, ‘Are you sure that’s what you want to do?’ ” Fletcher recalls. She knew the work would be tough — she grew up milking cows every day. But it’s what she wanted.

5 Things I Always Do When I Want to Lose Weight

I recently returned from an eight day vacation in Dubai. I never thought I would visit the Middle East in my life, so I was determined to make the most of this unique opportunity.

Every meal we had was lavish and indulgent. Every day we drank champagne and cocktails.

And although I logged over 100,000 steps during the week and made great use of the gym at our hotel, there was no denying that my clothes were uncomfortably tight when I got home.

Naturally, I regret nothing. I don’t mind how I look when I’m a few pounds heavier (most people wouldn’t notice), but I wanted to get back to my normal weight because I am more comfortable there. My clothes fit better and I feel more myself.

I’ve written before that I don’t believe in cleanses, detoxes or diets. Instead I rely on my Home Court Habits to get me back into my comfort zone.

But over the years I’ve noticed that there are certain habits I focus on more intently when I’m actively trying to lose weight.

None of these deviate from my normal Home Court Habits, I just adhere to them more closely and allow myself fewer (or no) exceptions than I would when at my ideal weight. I call this habit tightening.

It’s …

Your Quinoa Habit Really Did Help Peru's Poor. But There's Trouble Ahead

The price of quinoa tripled from 2006 to 2013 as America and Europe discovered this new superfood. That led to scary media reports that the people who grew it in the high Andes mountains of Bolivia and Peru could no longer afford to eat it. And while, as we reported, groups working on the ground tried to spread the word that your love of quinoa was actually helping Andean farmers, that was still anecdote rather than evidence.

The lack of evidence didn’t seem right to Marc Bellemare, an agricultural economist at the University of Minnesota, or Seth Gitter, another economist at Towson Un…

Hi friends! I’m back with part 2 of our weekend adventures because apparently I took too many photos this weekend to fit them all into one post! Part 1 featured more cherry blossom running photos and a delicious dinner in case you missed it. 😉

On Sunday, Matt and I had the day free and decided to take ourselves on a little hiking adventure.

We were considering hiking Old Rag (our fave – our engagement even happened there!), but decided in the end to mix it up and try something new. Enter: Sky Meadows State Park!

Vegan Mashed Cauliflower with Kale and Mushroom

Source: http://www.runningonrealfood.com/vegan-mashed-cauliflower/

With my nutrition goals right now, I’ve been making mashed cauliflower quite a bit since it’s so low in carbs yet still very filling. Mashed cauliflower makes a great alternative to traditional mashed potatoes and is just as delicious. This version gets spruced up with kale, mushrooms, onion and plenty of garlic for a flavour-packed,…
