Drinking Wine Isn’t As Good for You As You Think

Source: http://greatist.com/live/drinking-wine-isnt-as-good-for-you-as-you-think?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Whenever anyone questions our penchant for starting happy hour at 4 p.m., we throw them a little side eye and say, “You know wine can help you live longer!” Well, it looks like we’re going to have to retire that factoid: A new meta-analysis (science speak for a study that looks at dozens of other studies) found that moderate drinkers don’t actually live longer than those who stay sober.

“This study challenges a most uncomfortable finding of alcohol research over the past decade—that moderate alcohol consumption reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease,” says Marion Nestle, Ph.D., a nutrition professor at NYU. “What surprises me is that it has taken this long to dig deeply into the methods of those studies.”

The problems with the existing research stems from their definition of drinkers and nondrinkers. Moderate drinking is usually defined as an average of two drinks per night for men and one drink for women. (Females get the short end of the stick because they tend to weigh less and alcohol has been connected to an increased risk of breast cancer.) But many of the 87 peer-reviewed studies classified people who stopped drinking for medical reasons as nondrinkers, making the drinkers look artificially healthier. When researchers adjusted for this bias, the studies no longer showed that drinking added years onto lushes’ lives.

But there’s no need to pack up your wine glasses for good. “Because drinking does not occur in isolat…

Running into Spring + Avocado Toast Love

Hey friends – happy Wednesday! I’m LOVING March weather in DC this year – usually March is a rough month because you’re so over the cold but apparently this year spring is here early. :)

I’m also really loving that it’s so light in the evenings again – totally worth dealing with dark morning workouts! Light evenings make the days feel so much longer and more full. For example – last night I met my friend Karen around 6:30 for a nice stroll and low key outdoor dinner date, which totally wouldn’t have happened had it not been light and warm out!

Live to fight another day

FitBits | UWCB Brighton - The Grand Hotel

It’s taken me nearly a week to sit down and write this.

It’s a far cry from what I wanted to write about my second Ultra White Collar Boxing experience. I’m still so gutted that it turned out this way – so jealous of everyone tagging themselves in the amazing official photos, even though there really was no other outcome for me that day – I just didn’t know it yet.

When I got to The Grand Hotel last Saturday afternoon to meet my fellow boxers, my mind was calm, focused and ready to fight. Yes, I had a bit of a headache, and I felt a bit sluggish, but I hadn’t trained since Tuesday and had been fending off a cold after another busy week so it was nothing unexpected.

I necked another couple of paracetamol and thought nothing of it. Then it all went to shit. The whole day, along with every single one of the eight weeks leading up to it – wasted, just like that.

Or at least that’s how I felt.

Join Me for a Retreat on Happiness, Mindfulness & Living a Full Life

Source: http://zenhabits.net/ecuador/

By Leo Babauta

This fall, I’ll be a part of a retreat in Ecuador (Oct. 29-Nov. 5, 2016), and I’m really looking forward to it. I’d like to invite you to join me.

I’ll be one of three presenters, along with my friend J.D. Roth (founder of Money Boss and one of my original blogging inspirations) and David Cain of Raptitude.

We’re going to talk about the Habits of Mindfulness, How to Build Confidence and Destroy Fear, and Happiness.

But this retreat is about more than these presentations — it’s about taking a step back and thinking about what to do with your “one wild and precious life”. Here’s what the retreat creator Cheryl Reed says:

“The days, months, and years seem to go by so quickly that we often postpone our happiness and truly living for some distant time in the future or for when circumstances in our lives are just right. Life is meant to be lived right here and right now. This retreat has been designed to teach you how to be happy exactly where you are. We will help you define your dreams and passions and learn how to begin incorporating them into your everyday life. We will teach you how to get over the fears that may be blocking you from going after what you want.

“And you will learn how to form habits to help you achieve your goals and the key habit, mindfulness which will help you stay on track. You will go home with a plan on how to start living the rest o…

Sweep Dangerous Toxins Out Of Your Bloodstream … With This Cheap And Tasty Herb

Source: http://www.personaltrainingco.com/sweep-dangerous-toxins-out-of-your-bloodstream-with-this-cheap-and-tasty-herb/

As we get ready to end 2013, you might be looking to get a “fresh” start in 2014.

Most people do. You might already be thinking about setting new goals, new resolutions, and making new commitments to improve your life moving forward.

And while that’s great, I want to challenge you to do one more thing: Start the year fresh with a “clean” body. I’ll explain more in the article below.

Enjoy!

Sweep Dangerous Toxins Out Of Your Bloodstream … With This Cheap And Tasty Herb

You may not know it, but right now your blood might be heavily “polluted.”

Here’s what I mean …

Every day, your body is exposed to chemicals, pesticides, industrial solvents, and heavy metals that seep into your bloodstream.

For example, just handling the paper receipts you get at a retail store can cause bisphenol-A (BPA) to seep into your skin. Laundry detergents, soaps, cleaners, and more contain xenoestrogens (chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body), that also make their way into your bloodstream.

The foods you eat can contain pesticides, antibiotics, and heavy metals like mercury, lead, and arsenic.

Even if you’re “good” about staying clear of most of these things… chances are you still have a number of toxins floating around in your bloodstream.

It’s gotten so bad, a 2009 study conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), found up to 232 different chemicals in the bloodstreams of newbor…

Some Thoughts on Networking, And How Gary Vaynerchuk Gave Me The Best Advice Ever

Source: http://romanfitnesssystems.com/articles/gary-vaynerchuk-networking/

Serious question.

Serious question.

It’s often said that your network is your net worth. This is a maxim repeated in every industry, but it’s especially common in the world of online entrepreneurs.

For good reason: it’s true.

Thankfully, I happen to be pretty good at networking. By which I mean, I’m good at putting myself in position to meet cool people, becoming friendly with them, being cool with them, and adding value — which more or less equates to friendship.

Normally, when you ask people about how to network, you’ll get a bunch of platitudes like, “Just be cool,” “Don’t try too hard,” and “Always add value.”

Those things are true, of course, and necessary.

That said, if you really want a step by step approach to building your network, “Be cool” isn’t really an action step.

If you really want to understand how to add people to you network, cliche’s aren’t enough. But, I find direct action steps are often not enough, either.

So today, I want to do something different—I’m going to tell you a story; a story about how I did some networking, made a new friend and business contact, and fostered a connection of truly mutual benefit.

What follows below is the story of how I became closely …
