5 Ways to Cope with Family Bullies

Frustrated Woman

“When we can no longer change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” ~Viktor Frankl

Bullies are everywhere. One of the most insidious and destructive forms of bullying is family bullying, because it’s often done in the name of love.

As someone who was bullied by family members for more years than I care to count, I spent a lot of time learning that most of the bullying going on was not about me or my failings—it was more about what other people needed to unload.

Family bullies often pretend to (or believe they can) help by offering criticism. But a majority of the criticism is usually designed to make the bully feel better rather than to help the victim.

In my family, bullying was the way my parents got rid of their feelings. After years of paying close attention to what was going on under the surface, I finally realized that the more emotions my parents were trying to deny in themselves, the more they put me down.

I also learned that there are ways to minimize the effects of relating to dysfunctional family members, and I’d like to share them with you.

1. Plan your responses ahead of time.

If you know what kinds of comments push your buttons, prepare responses ahead of time that allow you to hold on to your self-esteem.

cherry blossom sunrise dc

Every year, I eagerly look forward to the arrival of the cherry blossoms in DC. Spring is such a fun time to be in this city! Everyone is out running, shedding their winter layers, and reveling in the warmer weather, and as if the arrival of beautiful spring running weather wasn’t enough, we also get a week of these gorgeous blossoms.

One of my favorite things to do when the cherry blossoms are out is to do a morning run date with friends to see them. Not only do we get amazing sunrise views, but we also get to see the cherry blossoms without the hordes that show up later in the day…

5 “Anytime, Anywhere” Exercises that’ll Keep You Lean, Toned and Strong!

Source: http://www.personaltrainingco.com/5-anytime-anywhere-exercises-thatll-keep-you-lean-toned-and-strong/

From time to time, it’s always a good idea to change things up with your workouts.

This prevents your body from adapting and getting used to the same workout that’s done over and over.

That’s why today I’d like to give you 5 exercises you can use to change things up a bit… and keep your body from guessing what you’ll do next.

These exercises can be done anywhere, since they’re bodyweight exercises. Mix and match them between your normal workouts for best results.

Here they are:

Pushup: This old classic is effective since it involves your chest, triceps and shoulders (deltoids). Do 3 sets of 10-20 reps. If you have trouble doing a regular pushup, try a knee (modified) pushup. Do this by placing both your knees on the floor, while keeping the rest of your upper body in the pushup position. If you struggle on bench press, try pushups only for about four weeks. Then go back to benching again. You’ll be pleasantly surprised when you do!

Triceps pushups: Same as above, except bring your hands closer together. Your thumbs should be nearly touching. Now do a pushup from this starting position.  Do them on your knees if necessary.  This will help tone your triceps (the bottom of your arm) and help you get rid of the “jiggly” arm fat many people can’t stand.

Jump Squats: Start in a squatting position with feet, shoulder-width apart. Jump as hard as you can, at the sa…

Why Stress and Pressure Can Actually Be Good for Us

Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/tinybuddha/~3/DW301ejrIfY/

Stressed

“A diamond doesn’t start out polished and shining. It once was nothing special, but with enough pressure and time, becomes spectacular.” ~Solange Nicole

It’s one of the last days of summer, and I wake up to my mother screaming.

I’m ten, and I pull off the covers and sneak to my door. Opening it slowly, I peek out and look down the stairs.

Men have stormed into our house. Ignoring my mom, they head into the living room, pick up the sofa, and throw it out on the lawn. They do the same with the dinner table and the rest of our furniture. But they’re not thieves; they’re not here to rob us.

They’re here to evict us.

There was no notice mailed to inform us that they’d be coming, no note plastered on the door.

Our first notice was the ding dong of the evictors ringing the doorbell.

As a kid, I had no idea what to do. The amount of stress was overwhelming. I didn’t cry. I just sat down on the stairs, held my knees to my chest, and watched, numb.

All our rent had been paid on time, but the landlord pocketed the cash instead of paying the mortgage. We spent the next six months homeless, living in a motel.

It was one of the best things to ever happen to me.

It took me twenty years to realize it, and when I did, I grieved. I ha…

Stop Buying into the Fitness Industry

Source: http://evolutiontucson.com/stop-buying-in-to-the-fitness-industry/

I have been very contemplative over the past few months about the future of the Fitness Industry and how Evolution Fitness will progress as a business to serve people that want to become stronger and healthier. It has never been in our belief system to be at the center of the weight loss world or competing against the big box gyms. It is amazing how this industry will play on the emotions of individuals that have struggled with losing weight over a life time.  There are billions of dollars of products sold each year with dishonest marketing tactics that will get young women to try in attempts to lose that weight and fit into smaller jeans, and at the end of it those products are either completely ineffective or highly dangerous for health. On the other end young men are force fed this BS of taking ineffective supplements to get ripped and jacked, yet the models they are idolizing in those pictures are dosed with 10 times the Testosterone any human would naturally have in their body.

When I started Evolution in 2010 the goal was strength. Fast forward to 2016 the goal is still strength. Strength does have a greater purpose. It allows for more personal independence and confidence. Strength isn’t about becoming a powerlifter or world class athlete. Strength is about being able to challenge yourself and progressively move more weight in training to become better for activities in the outside world. So when you are looking for BS marketing to draw you in, you won&…

Personal Trainer Advice: How to prevent “GERD” and the more serious health problems that may spring from it.

Source: http://www.personaltrainingco.com/personal-trainer-advice-how-to-prevent-gerd-and-the-more-serious-health-problems-that-may-spring-from-it/

Sixty percent of the adult population will experience some form of it within a 12 month period… And 20 to 30 percent will have weekly symptoms according to a

2008 Statistical Brief by The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project.

It’s called gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD for short. But it’s more commonly known as heartburn – even though heartburn is actually a symptom of GERD. Other symptoms include a dry cough, having trouble swallowing and asthmatic-related problems.

It results when the muscles at the entrance of the stomach are relaxed allowing a back flow of food, stomach acid and digestive enzymes to flow up your esophagus.

And while heartburn is unpleasant, the more pressing reason to avoid GERD is that it can lead to more serious health problems such as asthma, pulmonary fibrosis and even esophageal cancer.

Here are some tips on how you can reduce your chances of experiencing GERD and what you should do if you suffer GERD-like symptons.

First off, avoid fatty foods. They tend to relax the stomach muscle entrance area. Foods like chicken wings, french fries, deep dish pizza, donuts, brownies, chocolate, mint, potato chips, creamy salad dressings and so on should not be on your menu. Also say “no thank you” to fried foods. And if you experience GERD-like symptoms, avoid spicy foods.

Stay away from acidic type foods like citrus fruits (especially oranges, grapefruits, limes,…
