Emergence

Source: http://www.nu-ufitness.com/emergence/

Some of us retract; we retreat to a quiet place. We hide; it is one of the most beautiful and skillful practices of the natural world.
Think about it… the held bud of a summer rose, a hibernating bear, dark before the dawn, snow before spring. Hiding is always looked at as a bad thing, but I believe it is underestimated. Life; we emerge from our mother after hiding for 9 months. That is the time to grow, and ready ourselves for our birth into the light of the world; if we come too early then we are in need of much care by many hands.

If done correctly, hiding is the spirit guide for the assurance that you will emerge whole. At the first start of life, as kids, or even as growing adults… we can recoil from the conditions that have caught us and imprisoned us, many times in ways where we have been too easily compromised and too easily discarded.
We live in a day and age of the scrutinized soul and our immediate disclosure of our thoughts, dreams, and desires exposed too much, too early, and often times our best qualities forced out of us too soon into this world with minds and ideals that oppress our sense of self and our sense of others.

What is REAL and TRUE, if you think about it, always starts as hidden. What is valued inside of us should not be known in ways that diminishes its presence.
Hiding is freedom from the misunderstanding of others, especially with an ever enclosing world view of oppressiveness that tries to name us, anticipate…

Food Focus- Grapefruit

Source: http://refineryfitnesspdx.com/food-focus-grapefruit/

Good Afternoon and Happy Sunday!

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

Today, I want to talk about the seasonal food, GRAPEFRUIT!  I absolutely love grapefruit and feel that it is associated as being a diet food due to the popular 80’s  Grapefruit Diet.  Anyone else remember this?  I might be aging myself here, but essentially you ate 1/2 a grapefruit at every meal and it was supposed to help melt off the pounds.

Now, I don’t necessarily believe that will happen, but I do believe that grapefruit is a great addition to your daily diet for multiple reasons.

Health Benefits of Grapefruit

1) Rich in Vitamin C- helps boost your immune system which is crucial right now with the colds that are going around.

2) Aids in Weight Loss- high in fat-burning enzymes that help boost your metabolism.  Try eating a grapefruit a day.

3) High in Vitamin A– that helps to combat skin damage caused by oxidative stress.   Protects skin from dryness, psoriasis, acne, and wrinkles.

4) Soothes Sore Throats and Coughs-mix some grapefruit juice with warm water and honey.  This will reduce inflammation in the through and soothe the inner lining.

5) Helps with Insomnia- grapefruit contains lycopene which helps induce sleep.  Try drinking a warm glass of grapefruit juice before bed for better sleep.

One of my favorite grapefruit varieties is the Organic Honeygold Grapefruit that is only in stores …

When Chefs Become Famous Cooking Other Cultures' Food

Rick Bayless is a master of Mexican cuisine. He's also a white guy from Oklahoma. Over the years, that has made him the target of criticism. Who gets to be the ambassador of a cuisine?

So you walk into the new Korean joint around the corner and discover that (gasp) the head chef is a white guy from Des Moines. What’s your gut reaction? Do you want to walk out? Why?

The question of who gets to cook other people’s food can be squishy — just like the question of who gets to tell other people’s stories. (See: The whole controversy over the casting of the new Nina Simone biopic.)

For some non-white Americans, the idea of eating “ethnic cuisine” (and there’s a whole other debate about that term) not cooked by someone of that ethnicity can feel like a form of cultural theft. Where does inspiratio…

5 Ways To Help Form Healthy Habits And Behavior Changes In Your Clients

Source: http://www.theptdc.com/2015/12/5-ways-to-help-form-healthy-habits-and-behavior-changes-in-your-clients/

I‘M ALWAYS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT NEW WAYS TO IMPROVE MY RESULTS WITH CLIENTS. During my first two years as a trainer, I felt a little powerless with some clients.

I told them all the right things. Reduce carbohydrates, eat more protein and veggies with every meal, strength train. The thing is, a lot of my clients didn’t make much progress.

Every week I would take their measurements but still no change. I’m sure you know the feeling. It’s frustrating as hell. They were just “bad clients.” I would slowly get rid of them and work with people who actually wanted to change, not time wasters.

As a fitness professional you have to realize that you’re an outlier. We are the minority. I remember my first day of my exercise science degree my lecturer called us all “freaks.”

Why you ask?

Most people don’t look forward to hitting the gym first thing in the morning or doing mobility work during free time. They’re not like us. So why then do we as an industry act a like we’re training fellow trainers? Someone who puts fitness and nutrition above everything else in their lives?

Once I opened my eyes I realized that they weren’t bad clients. I was just a bad trainer. It wasn’t that they weren’t getting it. It was that I was speaking to them at my level, not theirs.

If you want to be more than just another rep counting trainer it’s time to start helping clients build habits and change behaviors.

Digestion and the Power of SLOWING DOWN

Source: http://refineryfitnesspdx.com/digestion-and-the-power-of-slowing-down/

Good Afternoon and Happy Sunday!

When it comes to increased health, it’s not just what we eat but how we eat. Digestion actually begins in the mouth, where contact with our teeth and digestive enzymes in our saliva break down food. But these days most of us rush through the whole eating experience, barely acknowledging what we’re putting in our mouths. We eat while distracted—working, reading, texting, talking and watching television—and swallow our food practically whole. On average we chew each bite only eight times. It’s no wonder that many people have digestive problems.

The key is to SLOW DOWN and focus on chewing your food.

There are many great reasons to slow down and chew your food.

Saliva breaks down food into simple sugars, creating a sweet taste. The more we chew, the sweeter our food becomes, so we don’t crave those after-meal sweets.
Chewing reduces digestive distress and improves assimilation, allowing our bodies to absorb maximum nutrition from each bite of food.
More chewing produces more endorphins, the brain chemicals responsible for giving you that natural feel good high!
It’s also helpful for weight loss, because when we are chewing well, we are more apt to notice when we are full.
In fact, chewing can promote increased circulation, enhanced immunity, increased energy and endurance, as well as improve skin health and stabilize weight.  Good stuff!
Taking time with a meal, beginning with chewing, allows for…

How to Know It’s Time to Leave Your Gym

Source: http://www.theptdc.com/2016/03/how-to-know-its-time-to-leave-your-gym/

For one reason or another, you feel like the time has come to move on from your current gym. But with that feeling comes unease, fear even, as well as feelings of cautious excitement for what may lie beyond your current gym walls. This is normal. Everyone goes through this, but the comfort of knowing you’re not alone doesn’t make leaving your gym any easier.

Depending on how long you’ve been with your gym, it feels more like a break-up than anything else. You may have grown very close to those clients who have been with you for years, shared their personal lives with you, and maybe even shed a few tears on your shoulder. But no matter how many “Hey, I really enjoyed that workout today” or “Hey, I finally wore that dress I have been waiting to wear.” texts you get from your favorite clients, that feeling of being gnawed at from the insides just doesn’t go away: Somehow in your heart’s heart, you know you want to leave your gym, but should you?

How to Know It’s Time

Truth be told, there is no perfect time, or some grand sign that will make you realize it is time to quit.

Sure, you may encounter some more obvious situations (e.g. physical risk of harm, sexual harassment, unethical behavior) that’ll pave a clearer path for you to the exit, but outside of those instances, you can reflect on whether one or more of the following is true:

You have no ro…
