If thinking about ramen summons images of styrofoam cups and seasoning packets with enough salt to make you dry up like a prune, you haven’t lived—when it comes to noodle soup consumption, anyway.

Ranging in flavors from bacon and egg to spicy Sriracha to vegetarian miso, these ramen recipes outdo any packaged variety and are almost as easy to make. Bonus: It’s a heck of a lot cheaper to go DIY than splurge on $10 noodle bowls. It’s time to start noodling around.

Screw Perfection

(This article was written with holy hell this is stronger than usual coffee pulsing through my veins. Don’t say you weren’t warned.)

Striving for perfection is ruining our lives.

It leaves us frustrated if we don’t attain it and immobilized if we’re afraid of not achieving it with our plan of execution, and therefore don’t take any action.

“If we can’t be perfect, what’s the point of even trying?” we often wonder or, worse yet, are taught to believe is worth asking in the first place.

It’s no secret, because I’ve said it on this website multiple times, that I’m a perfectionist. Always have been. Whether it was achieving straight A’s throughout college, being the only one in class to memorize over 100 terms and definitions, or anything else I set my mind to, I’ve always wanted to achieve perfection, and nothing less.

I thought this relentless pursuit of doing everything perfectly was a badge of honor. I thought it would serve me well and ensure I reached my goals.

But I’m no longer a perfectionist. I’m a recovering perfectionist.

Why? Because I’ve realized that being a perfectionist doesn’t always serve me well. In fact, it’s proven to be harmful.

Let me tell you a story about a salad. Yes, y…

Why You Should Drink More Water

Source: http://www.fannetasticfood.com/2016/01/26/why-you-should-drink-more-water/

Thank you to Nestle Waters for sponsoring this post.

As a dietitian with a private practice, I’m often working with my clients to try to get them drinking more water. Why is water so important? Basically, water helps our bodies to function optimally and being well hydrated is important to both physical performance as well as mental cognition. Here are just a few of the main reasons water is so key to health.

why you should drink my water

1) Water is necessary to maintain the balance of body fluids, which is important for digestion, absorption, circulation, maintenance of body temperature, transportation of nutrients, and creation of saliva.

2) For my fellow fitness fans, water helps muscle cells to function properly! Cells that don’t maintain their balance of fluids will shrivel, which can result in muscle fatigue.

3) Water is necessary for transporting waste products in and out of cells. If your pee is dark yellow vs. a light lemonade color, time to drink more water. Also – water helps maintain normal bowel function, keeping things moving along properly in y…

In the Mood for Comfort Food? Read This First.

I just experienced my first East Coast blizzard and it was so exciting. While my dog Toaster frolicked in fresh powder and my husband tried to become a living snowman, I was on a singular mission to warm the house with an 8-hour braised pork shoulder seasoned with chilies and Mexican spices.

Of all the things that trigger cravings for comfort food, cold weather is pretty universal. Being cold is deeply uncomfortable, and our natural instinct is to want to warm ourselves both inside and out.

But while your instinct to maintain your core temperature may explain why you don’t yearn for salad and gazpacho in the dead of winter, it doesn’t condemn you to four months of pancakes and mac n’ cheese. If you understand what your brain is ultimately after, you can tend to your deepest needs without diving head first into the cookie jar.

In times of physical and emotional stress, your brain yearns for comfort and safety. Foods, particularly those that stimulate the dopamine/reward pathways in your brain (sugar, fat, salt), can feel like the perfect antidote in these conditions. And indeed, they can provide some temporary relief.

Research has shown that personally defined “comfort foods” do improve mood af…

9 Surprising Things Your Eyes Can Reveal About Your Health

Source: http://greatist.com/live/what-eyes-reveal-about-health?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

As romantic as it sounds, we know our eyes aren’t actually the windows to our soul. But as it turns out, they can be windows to our health.

Whether your eyes are irritated and bloodshot, or other tiny changes are happening that aren’t readily apparent, taking a peek at your peepers can provide a wealth of health info, from diabetes to high blood pressure to sun damage.

Of course, no one’s saying it’s a good idea to play eye doctor at home. Optometrists and ophthalmologists are big proponents of keeping up regular eye exams. And you should see a doctor right away if you notice any sudden or major vision changes. In the meantime, read up on these nine surprising conditions that a thorough look in the mirror may reveal.

Bloodshot Eyes

1. You strained your eyes.

Irritated, bloodshot eyes are telltale sign of eye strain. Whether you’ve been wearing your contacts too long or squinting at a screen all day, overuse typically presents with redness, dryness, and discomfort, says Carl Jacobsen, O.D., chief of the ocular disease clinic at University of California Berkeley School of Optometry. Lubricating or rewetting drops can help.

No more staring at plantains at the supermarket without a clue how to use them—pick up a couple of these zinc and beta carotene-rich cousins of the banana, throw them in the blender along with apples, eggs, and spices, and whirl them into gluten-free cake batter. Thanks to the natural sugars from the fruit, only a third of a cup of maple syrup is needed to achieve the perfect light sweetness in the baked results.</…

A Beautiful, Funny Way to Look at the Little Lies You Tell Yourself

Source: http://greatist.com/live/lies-tell-yourself-every-day?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

How often have you told yourself “I’ll go to bed earlier tonight” or “I’ll just have one glass of wine”—only to have your best of intentions completely fail you?

Sometimes it’s best to laugh at the lies we tell ourselves every day and remember that we’re only human. Lauren Hom is a 25-year-old, Brooklyn-based designer and letterer whose work will make you do exactly that.

The hilarious graphics found on her blog, Daily Dishonesty (which has now been made into a book), are refreshing reminders that you’re not alone when your day goes awry. (You can also catch them on Instagram.)

Calories don't count on the weekend.

Just don’t want to know.

I'm never drinking again.

Until happy hour.

You Don’t Have to Appear Perfect: It’s Okay to Admit You’re Flawed

Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/tinybuddha/~3/FbITEmq1ehM/

You Were Born to Be Real

“Out of your vulnerabilities will come your strength.” ~Sigmund Freud

If you’re anything like I was, you have an image of yourself that you want other people to adopt. You think people expect that of you or would like you better if that’s who you were, so you pretend to be that person.

Over time, you put on layers of protection to prevent people from seeing the imperfections that would undermine that perception. You refuse to admit to those imperfections. You may also blame others, the weather, or fate for any perceived failure—anything but yourself.

As a result, you can’t interact with people in a real way because you can never let your guard down and be yourself. So your relationships are less than they could be.

And you can’t really grow, because that would involve admitting you have a weakness.

I’ve been there.

I spent decades trying to live up to the image I thought people wanted and expected of me: the golden-boy, the successful one, the smart one.

I am an only child and the oldest kid in my generation in my family. With that came a lot of pressure, mostly self-imposed.

I got good grades in smart-kid classes, I didn’t drink, I didn’t do drugs, I started on my high school basketball team, I cou…
