Let Yourself Shine

“We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?” ~Marianne Williamson

I’ve been dreaming about dead bodies again—disposing of dead bodies. Given that I have never actually killed anyone it’s probably a little weird how often this crops up for me. My dream metaphors tend to be blatant and graphic. I think my subconscious mind really wants me to pay attention to them.

I don’t have recurrent dreams per se, but I do get recurring dream themes. Lately my subconscious has been knocking me over the head with images around hiding things I don’t want others to see (thus the dead bodies) and frantically looking for things that I can’t find.

Last night three people were impatiently waiting in expectation for me to produce a simple receipt, we all knew exactly where it was supposed to be, but damned if I could find it.

I used to Google dream interpretations and ask people what they thought it all meant. But I have come to realize that our dreams, and the imagery contained within them, are as individual and personal as we are. And if we really think about it, we know exactly what they are trying to tell us. Sometimes we may not want to know, but the information is …

Last summer, cases of particular strain of Listeria started popping up in six states in the Northeast and Midwest U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says since July 2015, 12 people have been sickened and one person from Michigan has died in this outbreak. And the agency recently confirmed that five of the people who got sick reported eating packaged salad. Two of them specified that they ate Dole brand packaged salad.

Why are investigators only connecting the dots between the outbreak and its source?

Well, it wasn’t until last week that DNA “fingerprint…

How Mindfulness Is Emerging in MBA Programs

It’s no myth that mindfulness in the workplace will one day transform the way we do business. When employees begin to approach their jobs with more clarity and purpose, they will inevitably become more productive and thoughtful in their decision making. This is why industry giants like Target, Google, Ford, Aetna, General Mills, and Goldman Sachs have already adopted these practices within their office walls. What’s next? Taking this trend-turned-movement a step further are schools, especially at the university and graduate level, that are embracing its principles and sharing them with America’s future corporate leaders.

Martin Davidson, a Johnson and Higgins Professor of Business Administration at University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business, is one such pioneer in higher-education who is hoping to instill the value of investing in this mental tool in all his MBA students. In this video interview, Sonima’s founder, Sonia Jones, sits down with Davidson to discuss why he’s bringing mindfulness to his classrooms and how he hopes it will benefit his students.

Using External Cueing To Improve Linear Acceleration

“I’m not fast, but I like to pretend I am on the internet.”

Me

Okay, I’m kinda fast.1

Well, I mean, as far as 39 year olds who are roughly 15 years removed from playing any competitive sports are concerned, I’m lightening quick.

Besides, baldness increases aerodynamics right?

Truth be told: as a strength and conditioning coach it’s not required I win the 100m in the Olympics in order to speak to the topic at hand. Granted I should be able to demonstrate a sprint or sprint mechanics without resembling a one-legged pirate or worse…blowing out a hamstring.

But I don’t need to be a world-class sprinter myself in order to coach or teach others to be able do it. Which is why I’ve been making my way through Lee Taft’s Certified Speed and Agility Coach curriculum to better augment my coaching abilities.

At the end of the day it’s about having the ability to break down movement into more manageable parts and more importantly, having the ability to get your athletes into better positions (in order to express speed or strength or whatever).

Milk marketing, Australian style

Source: http://www.foodpolitics.com/2016/01/milk-marketing-australian-style/

I’m in residence at the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney for a bit and am getting the chance to learn the Australian version of food politics.

I like milk with my coffee.  Here’s all they had at a local corner store.

The banner on the label says that it “NATURALLY contains A2 protein.*”

A2 protein?  What’s that?

The label, alas, is not much help.

*Dairy Farmers milk naturally contains A2 protein as well as A1 protein.  Of those proteins, our tests to date confirm that 50-7-% is A2.

So?  Should we care?  YES, according to the A2 Milk Company:

The two main types of milk proteins are the casein and the whey proteins. These make up to 80% and 20% of the protein content of cows’ milk respectively. Other proteins present at low levels in milk include antibodies and iron carrying proteins.

Beta-casein makes up about one third of the total protein content in milk. All cows make beta-casein but it is the type of beta-casein that matters. There are two types of beta-casein: A1 and A2. They differ by only one amino acid. Such small differences in the amino acid composition of proteins can result in the different protein forms having different properties.

Here's Why Your Laptop Charger Gets So Hot

Source: http://greatist.com/live/laptop-chargers-get-hot?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

You’re lying in bed, binging on 90s TV, and suddenly it feels like you turned on an electric blanket. But you don’t have one—this isn’t your grandparents house, after all. All that warmth is coming from the little box in the middle of your laptop charger. As this video from Vox explains, the box converts the alternating current electricity that comes out of the wall socket to direct current, which your laptop runs on. The heat is just the wasted energy from the conversion process. And it’s usually no big deal, unless touching the box makes you want to play hot potato. If it feels more like a stovetop than a charger, something is amiss, and you’ll want to get it checked out.

Snowy Weekend + Blizzard Wedding

Source: http://www.fannetasticfood.com/2016/01/25/snowy-weekend-blizzard-wedding/

Well, my friends – it was quite the weekend! As you know, starting on Friday afternoon in the DC area, it snowed. And by snowed, I mean it snowed A LOT. Like, 2 feet when all was said and done by Sunday.

On Saturday, Matt and I took full advantage and enjoyed walking around and playing in the snow.

As you can tell in the photo below, I lost the wrestling match. 😉

Rey from Star Wars Deadlifted 176 Pounds. How Does that Make You Feel?

Source: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2016/01/25/rey-from-star-wars-deadlifted-187-pounds-how-does-that-make-you-feel/

Last week we shared a video on Facebook that created more excitement and controversy than anything we’ve ever posted: A video of Daisy Ridley (Rey from Star Wars Ep VII) deadlifting with great form, 176 lbs/80 kilos:

I don’t know if #fitnessfriday is a thing(?!) but HERE’S MINE! Lifting 80 kilos/176 pounds feeling like an absolute boss. 😏😏😏 Initially I had to pack on some muscle to look like a desert scavenger, but have continued working out because it makes me feel really good. The female form is beautiful in all shapes and sizes, whether that’s athletic, straight up straight down or curvy; you just have to do what makes you feel good, try not compare yourself to other people and LOVE YOURSELF!!! As it stands I’m of the athletic variety so I’m gonna keep pumping those weights 😄<img src="http://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/72×72/1f604.png" alt="😄" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em;max-he…
