Here's Why Everyone Should Eat More Cereal

Source: http://greatist.com/eat/eat-more-cereal?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Sometime in the last decade we got the message that cereal wasn’t really “part of a complete breakfast.” (Sales are down 13 percent in the last 10 years.) We turned to Greek yogurt, smoothies, and even breakfast pizzas. Those options provide a heaping dose of nutrients, but most lack a very important one: fiber.

And as this article from Quartz explains, most Americans aren’t getting enough fiber in their diets, which is a problem considering all the health benefits it brings to the table, including:

Lowering risk of heart disease and diabetes.1 Reducing appetite.2 Decreasing likelihood of obesity.

The quick (and obvious) solution? Eat more cereal! Sure, not all types are created equal—Cookie Crisp and Cocoa Puffs don’t have much fiber, but the cereal aisle is packed with options that do. (Interestingly enough, the crunchy stuff was first invented as a health product.) Check out the rest of the breakfast food’s crazy history as well as its weight-loss benefits on Quartz.

How to Make Six-Ingredient Sesame Chicken Wings

Source: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2015/12/17/how-to-make-six-ingredient-sesame-chicken-wings/

When some people start eating healthier and eliminating junk from their diets, they miss things like pasta, bread, and cheese. Personally, I pine over Americanized Asian foods. Deep fried chicken smothered in sugary, sweet and sour sauces with mountains of rice and fluffy steam buns were staples of my childhood. My grandfather knew the owner of every Chinese restaurant in my home town because all he ate was Chinese food (sometimes he let us eat pizza).

Unfortunately, now that I know what goes into that kind of food, though delicious, it’s definitely not great for you. Even vegetable stir fries at Chinese restaurants are tossed in sauces that will crash your blood sugar and cooked in stuff you probably don’t want going into your body regularly.

So what’s an Asian food lover who also loves feeling well to do?

Americanized Chinese food is a tough thing to master without those mystery oils and sugary sauces, but we do our best. Here’s a healthy recipe that takes about an hour, has only 6 ingredients, and might just satisfy your craving for a vinegary, spicy Asian dish.

Lets go!

The Best Foods to Eat When You're Constipated

Source: http://greatist.com/eat/best-foods-constipation?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Yes, constipation is a little awkward to talk about, but it’s way worse to suffer in silence. And you’re far from alone if you commonly experience the telltale signs: bloating, pain when you try to poop, and trouble relieving yourself regularly. In fact, 42 million Americans deal with constipation every year.

Pinpointing what’s causing you to be plugged up can be tricky. Traveling a lot, changing your work schedule, and skipping workouts all can cause a change in your bathroom habits, says Jordan Karlitz, M.D., a gastroenterologist and assistant clinical professor at Tulane University School of Medicine.

But the biggest constipation culprit is what you eat—and that’s where the “F” word comes in. “The key is having enough fiber in your diet,” Karlitz says. “You want a good balance of soluble and insoluble fiber as well as enough water intake.”

Insoluble fiber bulks up stool, which makes it easier to pass through your system, while soluble fiber attracts water, which helps your body process the fiber without discomfort, says Gina Hassick, R.D. Just be sure to add fiber to your diet slowly to let your body adjust without gas and stomach pain, Hassick says. The next time you need help keeping things moving, turn to the 11 foods below.

Congress has unveiled a spending bill to keep the government running that also weighs in on plenty of food policy issues.

When lawmakers — and lobbyists — use the budget bill as a vehicle to slip in new policies or upend regulations, it reminds me of my kids at the grocery store.

They ask for Nutella. I say “No.” But when I’m not looking, they slip it into the cart. And it’s only the next day I see it slathered on toast.

So, here are some examples of food and agriculture provisions that have been slipped into the omnibus budget bill just unveiled by congressional leaders. So far, this is just a draft. But the bill appears likely to pass in both chambers of Congress, and President Obama has indicated he’s inclined to sign it into law.

One provision would give grocery stores and other food retailers more time to comply with regulations that will require them to post calorie information on menus. This provis…

5 PRODUCTIVITY HACKS YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE

Source: http://www.thefitbits.com/2015/10/5-productivity-hacks-you-need-in-your.html

My life is a busy one, with lots (of currently very exciting) things going on.

I’m one of those people who has trouble sitting still. My mind is often frantic with plans, projects, ideas and 100 different things on the go. I have little time for rest and I like it this way – we only get one life, we need to fill every day and soak up as much as we can.

As Sophie would say – one life, live it.
Spinning so many plates all the time can sometimes be overwhelming but I’ve been trying to take some time out to really organise and plan my life – at work, in fitness, for this blog and at home.

Forcing my brain to focus on one task at a time has been, shall we say, educational, but doable by, doing some brain training to improve my cognitive flexibility and working memory, courtesy of Weight Watchers’ BrainBoost campaign.

BrainBoost is all about building a stronger, more focused mind to stay productive and make healthy food choices throughout the day, even when that day’s been hectic and you’re tired. You can find out your eating typology and life hacks for healthier eating on the BrainBoost website.

I’ve been practicing my hacks and seen some steady improvements in my general ability to just get shit done recently – I’m focused, more energised and stronger at r…

Spot Toning Is Possible (But Here’s How It Really Works)

Source: http://greatist.com/move/truth-about-spot-toning?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

You’ve probably heard about spot toning before. Like a unicorn of the fitness world, you suspect it’s more fantasy than fact. Then again, you’ve probably also seen a multitude of commercials and products that promise crazy-impressive results in one specific area with one simple exercise (looking at you, ThighMaster).

And the idea that we could all get legs like Misty Copeland or biceps like Joe Manganiello is pretty tempting. Could a couple hundred lunges or curls be the secret? Bummer alert: It’s not that easy.

Spot Toning Vs. Spot Reduction Smart Ways to Be More Productive at the Gym

First things first: The terms spot toning and spot reduction are often used interchangeably, and both play into the dream of having more muscle definition and less fat in key areas (read: your thighs, arms, or lower abdomen). That said, they don’t actually mean the same thing. With spot toning, the goal is to strengthen and develop a certain muscle or muscle group. Not so much with spot reduction.

“The idea behind spot reduction—and it’s been perpetuated for a long time in the health and fitness space—is that we can target certain areas of the body—’trouble’ spots—and selectively burn off fat,’” says Jessica Matthews, an assistant professor of exercise …
