Imagine a community where people are constantly doing good deeds for others with no expectation for anything in return other than your own well-being and happiness. In a nutshell, this is the mission of Kula for Karma, a New York City-based nonprofit organization of trained volunteer yoga teachers who provide breath work, therapeutic yoga and meditation classes at no cost to people in need, particularly those who are facing illness, disease and chronic pain, or recovery from abuse, trauma and addiction.

Since Gerri Topfer founded Kula for Karma in 2007, it has expanded its platform to 600 programs across the Tri-State Area, which spans New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, including the Dubin Breast Center of the Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. In this video, Topfer, who is president of Kula for Karma, along with her colleague and executive director Penni Feiner, plus Dubin Breast Center patient Alicia Justiniano, discuss the origins of this special wellness program and how it is helping patients mentally and physically to heal.

The 6 Things We Learned While Watching Arnold Schwarzenegger Work Out

Source: http://greatist.com/move/arnold-schwarzenegger-live-streams-his-workout?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feed_http–greatistcom-

Arnold Schwarzenegger recently live streamed 30 minutes of his daily workout to promote his newest venture, a t-shirt (and fitness movement) called “Come With Me If You Want to Lift.” The live stream is a lot like Terminator Genisys—not really worth watching, except for a few golden scenes. So instead of sitting through the whole thing (though we did include the video below for die-hard fans), check out Schwarzenegger’s seven best nuggets of advice.

1. No half-reps.

The former governor of California frequently referenced his hatred for ending a lift before fully extending the muscle: “Go all the way up. None of these half-reps. That’s bullsh*t.”

2. Exhale as you exert yourself.

This is classic advice. It’s important to be deliberate with your breathing while working out.

3. There’s no such thing as the weaker sex.

We were pleasantly surprised by Schwarzenegger’s feminist stance, though he did make this comment in regards to doing a pose-off with the person you’re sleeping next to.

4. Work out your abs every day.

Do you sleep every day? What about eating breakfast? According to Arnold, abs are also a daily necessity.

5. We all have uncontrollable urges.

Yes, Arnold sometimes yells, “GET TO THE CHOPPA!”

6. Beer is better for you than milk.

“There is nothing that milk has that you really need,” Schwarzenegger says. “I tell you, there are more nutrients in beer than in milk.” That claim is a little far-fetched….

Chili Garlic Baked Parsnip Fries

I don’t know why I hadn’t thought to make baked fries out of parsnips up until now, like how is that even possible?? Anyways, I finally did and now I’m in love. I love the hint of sweetness from the parsnips combined with the chili, garlic and sea salt, it’s the perfect flavour combo! So…chili garlic…

A Sweet Charoset Recipe

Source: http://www.sonima.com/food/sweet-charoset-recipe/

It’s the rituals of remembrance I love best, the breath of tradition passed from family member to family member, an unbroken thread of sense memory and heart. So it is, even in the telling of a story as complex and tragic as that of Passover—the symbolism of each food at seder awakens sweetness within. An offering of lamb shank, salted water and bitter herbs to symbolize the tears and hardship of the enslaved, an egg for rebirth, and charoset as the bricks and mortar the Jews used in their work.

Charoset, for me, has always been something closer to a celebration: Sweet apples, red wine, and spices. We add a drizzle of honey in my family, and because I’m always on the hunt for balanced flavor, a touch of sea salt to finish it all off. While this is a perfectly acceptable pesach dinner accompaniment, it’s also wonderful eaten on its own at any time of year. prep-charoset-sonima-kale-caramelShareTweetPlusPin

On the road to the London Revolution

Source: http://www.thefitbits.com/2016/04/on-road-to-london-revolution.html

London Marathon might be on everyone’s agenda right now but I’ve got a few more miles than 26.2 on my mind. 158.8 more miles, to be exact.

The London Revolution is the UK’s largest multi-day sportive, a 185 mile loop around the capital, taking place 14/15 May. Promising to be more than just another sportive, it’s as much about competition as it is community, apparently catering for cyclists of all abilities – from the leg-shaving racers to the endorphin-hunting bike fiends like me.

Although, I have been known to shave my legs, you know, just once or twice…

The thing that got me most excited about this event isn’t the cycling, but the camping. Anyone who knows me will know I’m a sucker for going back to basics, surrendering all mod cons (bar my iPhone for the camera) and immersing myself in the great outdoors.

After 100 miles of hard riding on the first day, we’ll return to a fully functioning basecamp with complete with a two-course meal, hot showers, overnight bike security and access to a c…

16 Things Only People Who Love Strength Training Will Understand

Source: http://www.niashanks.com/love-strength-training/

things people who love strength training understandWhile it’s not an exclusive club that gives members-only jackets to its elite, there are some truths about strength training that only those who do it consistently, perhaps for years, can fully appreciate.

You can likely add to this list, but here are some observations and lessons I’ve learned over the past decade from strength training. It’s a wonderful teacher indeed, and we would be wise to soak in its lessons.

I don’t know about you, but strength training helps keep me sane. Nowadays much of my time is spent writing and while I love it, there are days I want to throw my laptop against a wall, douse it in gasoline and light it on fire, get in my car and drive to the mountains, surround myself with animals of all types, learn how to weave baskets and talk to birds, and live off the grid for the remainder of my life. I battle anxiety from time to time, and strength training is an effective remedy. Any anxiety I have can be transferred out of my body and into the barbell or dumbbells. When I have a holy hell I’m going to explode moment, I step into my garage for some iron-therapy.

Strength training teaches honesty. You can’t fudge a deadlift: you either pull it, or you don’t. A pus…

How Yoga Gives You Better Sleep

It’s 3 a.m. and you’re still counting sheep. When was the last time you had eight hours of uninterrupted sleep at night? Do you still know how it feels to wake up and feel truly refreshed?

Quality sleep has become a luxury amid our fast-paced lifestyle. There’s just so much to do with too little time. Sleep deprivation, sadly, is the norm. Without a doubt, not getting enough sleep each night makes for a rough day and can spell disaster in the long run if it becomes habitual.

The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School warns that in the short term, insufficient sleep can “affect judgment, mood, ability to learn and retain information, and may increase the risk of serious accidents and injuries.” Long-term sleep deprivation has grimmer consequences—obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and [gulp] premature death.

The repercussions of sleep deprivation go beyond irritability and sluggishness. A recent study suggests that seven nights of insufficient sleep can lead to more than 700 genetic changes.

Dr. Colin Smith, a professor at the University of Surrey, warns, “Clearly, sleep is critical to rebuilding the body and maintaining a functional state, all kinds…

Ritual Inspiration: Entrepreneur Doug Evans

Source: http://www.sonima.com/meditation/mindful-living/doug-evans/

One could safely say that Doug Evans has invented the world’s most advanced home juicer. At $699, it’s also the most expensive. For this price tag you get a product that’s Wi-Fi enabled, requires zero clean-up (thanks to the accompanying pouches of fresh fruit and vegetables that have prompted some to call it the “Keurig of juicers”), an app to manage the ordering, delivery, and freshness of said pouches (which cost $4 to $10, and unlike k-cups are recyclable), and a steady stream of cold-pressed organic juice at your fingertips. Juicero launched on March 31 in California.

Such an elaborate piece of machinery could only come to exist at the hands of someone really serious about juicing. Evans, a passionate vegan and yoga practitioner, is the former CEO of New York-based juice brand Organic Avenue. After Evans and his partner Denise Mari, sold a majority of Organic Avenue to an investment firm in 2013, Evans was let go from the company and he found himself at a loss of how to easily make quality cold-pressed juices at home. What started with a combustible prototype in his Brooklyn kitchen evolved into a product backed by $120 million in investments and a mission to reinvent the way people consume fresh fruits and vegetables. Here, we talk to Evans about his journey and what drives him personally and professionally.

You’re very vocal about your passion for juicing and you’ve even bui…
