Shaklee grant program offers new support for brain health research

Shaklee grant program offers new support for brain health research

Researchers are invited to apply for funding, as the company works to expand our knowledge about how nutrition impacts cognitive health as part of the Shaklee grant program.

How might nutrients, or a combination of nutrients, affect your memory over the next few hours? Or support your brain health over the next few years? With the launch of its new grant program for brain health research, Shaklee hopes to help scientists learn more of these answers.

“Shaklee is trying to bring our health span closer to our life span, and we believe nutrition can make a difference,” comments Chief Science Officer Bruce Daggy, Ph.D. talking about the Shaklee grant program, “Through this grant program, we are supporting new research to expand our understanding of the role nutrition can play in keeping us well.”

About the Brain Research Grant – Shaklee Grant Program

This newly established program, within the established Shaklee Grant Program, was created to provide targeted funding of research on the role of dietary supplements in supporting brain health. This grant will be funded by proceeds of Shaklee’s recently launched MindWorks™, a supplement developed to support short- and long-term cognitive health. MindWorks contains key ingredients that have three important benefits*:

1. Immediate improvement in memory and focus 3X better than the control group**.
2. Protects against age-related mental decline, as shown in a clinical study to reduce brain shrinkage rate, a common consequence of aging, by 30% over two years. †
3. Supports healthy circulation which is important for the delivery of oxygen and key nutrients to the brain.

** At six hours versus control.
† Based on a two year study of 223 adults with mild cognitive impairment.

Researchers interested in the Shaklee grant program have until Nov. 30, 2014 to submit brain health proposals. As with all Shaklee grants, animal studies will not be considered. Investigators who have secured funding elsewhere and who are requesting from Shaklee only marketed product, with or without a matching placebo, can submit proposals at any time.

Study questions most likely to receive funding under this program will involve evaluation of nutritional ingredients or ingredient combinations suitable for use in dietary supplements for either acute (e.g., short-term memory, concentration, reaction time) and/or long-term improvements to or maintenance of cognitive function in healthy adults.

“As reflected by the MindWorks launch, we have a strong interest in doing more in the area of cognitive health,” Daggy confirms. “Each of us has a brain that needs good nutrition to function optimally. Mental acuity is of concern to a broad range of adults, from college students who need to improve their focus on their studies, to older folks who have more serious concerns about maintaining long-term brain health.”

A long history of supporting academic research on nutrition Shaklee has supported a substantial body of research since the company was founded in 1956. That work has resulted in 100-plus scientific publications, which include clinical studies published in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific meetings.

Biography: Bruce Daggy, Ph.D.
Bruce Daggy serves as Senior Vice President, Research & Development and Chief Science Officer for Shaklee. He is primarily responsible for the scientific support of Shaklee’s robust portfolio of products including nutrition, personal care and household products.
His career spans 30 years in global roles within consumer healthcare. In nutrition, his work has ranged from developing leading nutritional supplements in India to providing sports nutrition products to elite athletes. Weight management and its impact on metabolic disease has been a major focus, with research leadership roles for three consumer brands: alli, Nutrisystem and Shaklee 180. He began his professional career in academia and then spent 10 years in healthcare research and development at The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G). After P&G, Daggy spent 13 years at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in both the United States and the United Kingdom in various leadership positions, including overseeing their global nutritional research and development, leading teams based in the UK and India. Subsequently, he was also the Vice President, Weight Control Research and Development for GSK.
Prior to joining Shaklee, Daggy served as Senior Vice President, Research and Development and Chief Science Officer at Nutrisystem, Inc. where he directed applied research and development for weight management and the prevention or management of obesity-related diseases and disorders.
Daggy has a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry from Cornell University and a B.A. in Biology from University of Virginia. I didn’t catch who said each one but if you were there you probably have a good idea. The important thing is to take these quotes and apply them to your Shaklee business.  And they would apply to just about any other entrepreneur’s quest for success as well.

 

Twelve things I learned at the 2014 Shaklee Regional Conference in Long Beach

  1. Shaklee can be fun. Ok, it is work but why can’t you enjoy it by working with people you want to be hanging with? And it helps having a product you can believe in.
  2. Shaklee is inclusive. There were so many different cultures, backgrounds, and languages included in the audience and speaker list. This shows that everyone can fit into Shaklee.
  3. Shaklee powers Team USA.  Jordan Malone was sponsored by Shaklee and was a Silver Medalist in Speed Skating in Sochi 2014. I got to hold the medal! Jordan’s message was that DRIVE can accomplish amazing things.
  4. Shaklee is becoming even more professional. Shaklee is hiring top executives with strong CPG backgrounds such as experience with P&G. This tells a lot about the professional direction for the company down the road.
  5. Shaklee-ize your home for a reason. The real reason to Shaklee-ize your home is because that is the way you will have your very own Shaklee story to relate to others. It will much tougher if your Shaklee story is how you watch others use the products and improve their lives but don’t take advantage of it the opportunity yourself.
  6. The Power of ONE is the simplest and most valuable lesson of the weekend. The Power of ONE shows you that you should always share your Shaklee story – either for the products or for the business opportunity – every chance you get. You never know when you will find the right ONE to pick up the ball and run with it.
  7. Retirement can be scary. According to the US Department of Commerce, out of every 100 working 25-year olds today, in the future:
    1. 1 will be wealthy
    2. 4 have enough to retire
    3. 63 will be on Social Security or charity
    4. 29 will be deceased(NOTE: they didn’t say what happened to the other three – Roswell???) It makes you wonder where you will be, doesn’t it?

  10. Attend everything. There are many opportunities with Shaklee to meet with other business leaders, potential leads, top executives, and satisfied customers. Attend every event possible and you will learn something new each time to help you out. I learned these 12 things and more just this weekend. And if there aren’t enough events, create your own.
  11. Follow-up is essential to success. Follow-up can take many forms. Phone calls. E-mails. Newsletters. Webinars. And doing something special once a year. This is just common sense for any marketing program but even more important for a Shaklee business leader.
  12. Recruit, recruit, and recruit. Schedule as many presentations – in person or online – as you possibly can. Numbers are the key to success. You will be told “no” so many more times than “yes” so you need to get out there.

My first Shaklee Global Conference

I just returned from my first Shaklee Global Conference. What a great event. There were so many friendly, positive, successful people all in one place – thousand of them!

10 things I learned at the Conference:

  1. Shaklee is a family.

    If a family can be defined as an association of people who share common beliefs or activities, then Shaklee definitely qualifies. Everyone I met had goals, experiences, and aspirations that I can identify with. I felt like I belonged.

  2. I belong to an amazing group.

    I met many of the successful business leaders in the same group to which I belong. There were a few familiar faces, but it was an opportunity to become acquainted with people I had only heard about before. It was like a family within a family.

  3. It is more fun being around positive people than negative ones.

    Everyone was upbeat, interested in learning new things, and excited about the changes in Shaklee. People were easy to talk with, genuinely interested in me and my Shaklee story, and were excited about continuing to build their business.

  4. Shaklee continues to improve the business opportunity.

    The Dream Plan announced by Shaklee is an exciting improvement to an already great opportunity. I don’t have years of experience to make comparisons with, but the Shaklee team seemed to “wow” everyone I talked to. Even the most seasoned veterans were telling me this was one of the most significant program changes they have ever seen.

  5. Shaklee continues to improve the product line.

    The new Fiber Advantage Bars, Get Clean Water filtration system, the FDA approved Cholesterol Reduction Complex, and Vita-D3 are incredible new products that will make people more healthy – and should be easy to use to impress new and existing customers.

  6. Shaklee people want to help each other.

    I would sit down at any table and start talking to people and quickly have things to talk about and discover many things I could learn. No one was “hoarding” their secrets to success – they wanted everyone to succeed.

  7. Success brings recognition as well as rewards.

    The top leaders were very well rewarded – highlighted by the line of new Mercedes Hybrid automobiles handed out. But success was recognized and rewarded at all levels, giving everyone encouragement to continue building their business.

  8. Shaklee International is a growing and exciting business.

    All of the international teams were well represented and recognized. The future of Shaklee Global is very bright, with a good foundation to build upon.

  9. Shaklee knows how to put on a great event.

    The venue, organization, and presentations were extremely professional. It made me feel like I was part of an organization that was confident and knew what they were doing.

  10. Enthusiasm is contagious.

    It would be difficult to come away from the Global Conference and not be impressed with Shaklee – both the people and the opportunity. Success breeds success. I can only imagine the sales volume the company is going to experience in the next few weeks!

Also the underlying theme of the event was that no one gets to be successful by luck or connections. It is based on work, hard work. And this experience makes me – and I am sure many others – want to get busy right away. I want to be on that stage next year!

In the latest issue of Consumer Reports, they review supplements that consumers should avoid. This is good information for everyone interested in taking vitamin supplements and other natural products to improve their health.

What does this mean for people taking vitamin supplements?  It means that you need to be informed. While you need to subscribe to Consumer Reports to get the information we encourage everyone to check it out. Consumer Reports is a valuable resource for information on many products and services. And nothing is more important than your health. Knowledge is power here.

As an Independent Shaklee Distributor we actively promote many natural products that we feel can make your life healthier. In checking the ingredients for Shaklee products we could not find any of the items singled out by Consumer Reports to be in any of the Shaklee products.  We will be getting more information and posting it here for a full story.

Shaklee promotes the Shaklee Difference – which means that the company takes this type of information seriously and only produces supplements that are healthy to take. Of course you will want to review the product labels and pay particular attention to the correct recommended dosage.

We also agree with Consumer Reports that you should consult your doctor about any supplement you decide to take and get their opinion as well. That’s their job to know what is good for you.
